Yeah, the CA model is one of the few semi-autos that Smith & Wesson is going to not change anything on (significant changes require retesting and microstamping) and continue to pay for the California Roster renewal fee.

That being said, the 642 with S&W logo grips is still on the list and under the same SKU of 163810, so some FFL's will transfer a plain Jane model, and I would imagine some will not since it does not have the S&W Logo grips. Same as with the 442.

Im in the process of buying another 642, had one dealer say yes, one say no.

But there is nothing on the gun but 642-2, and that is on the list. My dealer said he would receive it for me, regardless of the SKU on the box, hand me the box to take home, and DROS it as the 642-2.

As far as the Shield goes, IMOP, yes it's a cool gun, just a single stack M&P Compact, I found it too big and heavy for me as a compact, the Kahrs, PM, P and CW series and the Keltecs PF9's and others are smaller, lighter and cheaper. (PM and P series Kahrs are pricy)

Even if it was to fall off the list, there's always SSE.

Also every time some one post a price, there's always tons of poeople saying man you got screwed, it's only $$$$ dollars here, I can get it for a hundred less.

Price is always relative to the market your in, almost all the folks with the $100 cheaper prices are in LA area and can shop at Turners or other volume dealers, those of us in the Central Valley or Nor Cal, do not have that luxury.

My dealer of choice Alquist in Turlock price on the M&P9 CA version is $413.09 +tax and DROS. but here in Fresno, I'd probably pay mid $500's
S&W currently has four 642 revolvers listed on the CAHL.

      642-1 (Matte Silver) SKU 178042 / Alloy, Stainless Steel Revolver 1.87" .38 Spl 11/7/2014
      642-2 (S&W Logo Grip) SKU 163810 / Alloy; Stainless Steel Revolver 1.87" .38 Spl. 2/24/2015
      642-2 Laser Grips SKU 163811 / Alloy, Stainless Steel Revolver 1.87" .38 Spl 4/21/2014
      642-2 (Matte Silver) SKU 162521 / Alloy; Stainless Steel Revolver 2.5" .38 Spl 6/2/2014

There's no voodoo here. If the SKU of the revolver in question doesn't appear above (as of today) then it isn't permitted for sale by a dealer in CA. Brianm767, if your dealer is basing his permitted sales on which grips a firearm comes with instead of looking at the SKU he logged into his books, he's a fool. Don't try to insert logic here as our system doesn't account for it.

Sully, this is the second time I've read your Shield "recall" notification. Not a recall but a safety alert and yes there is a big difference between the two terms. No one recalled my year old pre alert Shield and furthermore there was and still is no safety alert issue with my Shield.
Do you really believe that the new flood of CA Shields will fall under the issued last August safety alert? Not.
Quit spreading outdated issues. For anyone who wants to check my source, there's a STICKY at the top of this forum.

No need to make the guy feel like crap because his friend is charging more for the gun. The bottom line is he will put them out at that price and they will sell. He gave his buddy a shot at it before it hit the floor. He has a business to run, he knows the demand. It doesn't make him a bad guy.

I think a Buddy price would be something like.... 399$ everyone else 489$ etc.

I've spoken with two gun stores since last Saturday. Both stated that the S&W Shield "will" fall of the roster in July. One even has a sign posted on their gun counter with a list of handguns that will fall off the roster and when.

Well, my gun owner friend sold all but two of the shield's he recently received. They sold at the price I quoted. Apparently somebody wants them at whatever price. And no, I decided not to buy a shield. Basically it's too small for my hand and my wife prefers her Glock 17. And as I stated earlier, two other gun shops both told me that the Shield will fall off the Roster in July. Maybe somebody doesn't have their story straight, but apparently there are some mixed messages about this handgun.

So now you spoke with a 3rd one (hint) and S&W has already indicated that they are renewing the California specific SD series and Shields. The press release from S&W has been posted everywhere on the internet and the CA specific models only started shipping in quantity last week. Did those shops say they'd bet money that those models would not be renewed? Ask them to put their money where their mouth is.

Let's squash the rumors Bull Elk, print this up for them:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 23, 2014) --- Smith & Wesson Corp. announced today that although it continually seeks ways to refine and improve its firearms so that consumers have access to the best possible products, the State of California is making that impossible when it comes to California residents.
Under California’s "Unsafe Handgun Act," any new semi-automatic pistol introduced into that state must comply with microstamping laws. In addition, California asserts that anything other than a cosmetic change to a handgun already on the California Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale, including performance enhancements and other improvements, requires it to be removed from the roster and retested. For semi-automatic pistols, this means it must comply with the microstamping requirements, as well.
Smith & Wesson does not and will not include microstamping in its firearms. A number of studies have indicated that microstamping is unreliable, serves no safety purpose, is cost prohibitive and, most importantly, is not proven to aid in preventing or solving crimes. The microstamping mandate and the company’s unwillingness to adopt this so-called technology will result in a diminishing number of Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistols available for purchase by California residents.
This is not a problem unique to Smith & Wesson. The microstamping legislation and California’s position regarding performance enhancements and other improvements creates the same challenge for all firearm manufacturers, since presumably all of them refine and improve their products over time.
Both the M&P Shield and the SDVE pistols are expected to remain on the California Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale as long as no changes are made to those models and the company does not plan to make changes to them for this reason. All other Smith & Wesson handguns are at risk of eventually falling off the roster over time. The company expects that any current production revolvers that fall off will be re-tested and returned to the roster, since microstamping does not apply to revolvers. Without some change in position by California, however, any semi-automatic pistols (other than the California-compliant models referenced above) that are removed from the roster will not be returned and law-abiding citizens will not be permitted to buy them from a licensed dealer in California.
James Debney, Smith & Wesson President & CEO, said, "As our products fall off the roster due to California’s interpretation of the Unsafe Handgun Act, we will continue to work with the NRA and the NSSF to oppose this poorly conceived law which mandates the unproven and unreliable concept of microstamping and makes it impossible for Californians to have access to the best products with the latest innovations. At the same time, we will do our best to support our
customers in California with state-compliant products, enabling them access to at least a portion of the firearms to which we believe all citizens are entitled. In these challenging times, we hope you will support Smith & Wesson, and all gun manufacturers, in our fight to make the Unsafe Handgun Act about safety. We also encourage you to support the NSSF’s lawsuit and other efforts to stop microstamping, before it impacts your Constitutional rights."
Unless California changes its position, all M&P pistols other than the M&P Shield, will fall off the roster by August, 2014, due to performance enhancements and other improvements we have made to those firearms. This includes the M&P9c, which has fallen off already and several other M&P models that will fall off by the end of this month. Other models already have fallen off and will continue to fall off for the same reason. Visit http://oag.ca.gov/sites/oag.ca.gov/f...ms/removed.pdf each week for a list published by the California Department of Justice of the handguns no longer on the roster.
California firearms dealers should check the official California Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale frequently, to determine which handguns are certified for sale in California. This list can be found at http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/.

And what happens after 5/15? If you think the CA Shield will fall of the roster you've been misinformed.

As for disassembly, read the owner's manual like every responsible owner should?

If you bought it because they told you it's falling off the roster they lied to you and got a sale out of it. It is a nice gun though.
