I'm considering getting my first 9mm. This would eventually be my go to open/concealed carry weapon. First off, I'm not afraid of carrying a full sized pistol, in fact, I'd prefer it. I have giant Paul Bunion sized hands and those little compacts and sub compacts just won't do. I'm 6'5" 230 lbs so I'm not terribly worried about printing when I do carry. Cost is always a factor but I'd much rather get the best fit and spend
My considerations:
92FS - I'm trained on and (relatively) proficient with the M9 (92FS) Beretta. I'm not terribly fond of it, but I know the system well and at the end of the day it gets the job done. The price is also a real plus here.
P226 - I've been eyeballing these for a while now. I've heard about being able to swap calibers relatively easy which would be nice for customization. I've had my hands on one but never fired it. I like the way it fits in my hand. I have mixed feelings about the lack of a physical safety though. One one hand, I've been trained all my life to go safety off, fire, safety on. On the other, I can sincerely see the advantage of removing that step from your draw. It has a nice heavy double action so snag firing shouldn't be an issue, and then there is always training with it. The negative I see with this weapon, in California models, is the inability to fire a round in the chamber with the magazine removed. I want to be able to fire when I pull the trigger. Period.
H&K USP - This one was actually suggested to me while I was poking around Turners today. I got my hands on it and it feels just fine to me, although not quite as instantly familiar as the P226 although that could have just been in my head. One real bonus here, at least on the one shown to me, was that it has a physical ambi safety. That's huge if you're in a situation where you have to shoot offhand, draw offhand or where you're switching sides a lot. I was also shown how easy it is to rack the slide without a free hand on a table or edge if you are in a position where you need to. I know that wouldn't be something you'd do normally, but I do see the value in it. Price point is a tad higher than Sig it seems too.
Those are the three that stood out to me. Please, bring me your input! I'd love to hear from someone who owns or has fired all 3, or has a suggestion that will blow these out of the water. Glock is not an option for me. I've held them, fired one and just not been a fan.
