I may know your neighbors' floorplans, but you won't know where anyone is located.

Well that's why you don't go firing off the whole magazine if you get in a pinch.

Any cartridge out of any gun that would be suitable for stopping an attacker has potential to kill someone on the other side of two layers of drywall. That is why if you are going to use a gun for protection, you need to practice hitting where you aim. Then practice some more.

Agreed. I will probably take a Home Defense class if I can.

That said, there seems to be a rather widespread belief that HP's don't overpenetrate through walls, which perhaps can be a dangerous sentiment to carry around. The probability is still rather low, but...

It might be even more than that. Putting 2" groups at 10 yards, or 'room sweeping' against immobile steel targets that don't think/respond is a lot different than being in a real defense situation.

I guess I should go paintballing or lasertagging

Sorry, I won't and don't recommend ammo for anyone, beyond quality factory ammo. Simply because what works reliably and accurately in my guns may not provide the same results for you.

Glaser - Nope - they don't work as advertised

I have personally seen glaser pass thru 1/2 in sheet rock a space then another 1/2 in sheet rock (to simulate an interior wall) and into gelatin.

The round didn't penetrate the gelatin very far - and fragmented to heck -

BUT - it acted like any other hollow point going thru wallboard.

Witnessed this at a Ballistics Demonstration put on by Hornady

Drywall doesn't feed well in my 1911, I need a reliability package done on it I guess.

In terms of birdshot... Given two people, an intruder armed with God knows what and a determined homeowner with a 12guage full of birdshot, I'm still going to give the edge to the guy with the shotgun. Even if the birdshot doesn't incapacitate the intruder, getting hit with it is still probably more shocking than beig the guy shooting birdshot and not seeing the guy fall down. I'm guessing that when people open fire on you with a shotgun, chances are you will leave the house. If you are an accomplice, seeing your partner shot with a shotgun will likely make you abandon your home invading plans.

In any case I personally believe that birdshot is better than hurting bystanders in othe rooms/apartments. If it doesn't stop the guy, you are still holdin a handy dandy club.

Forget about stopping power. If you can't hit it, you can't stop it.

Lots of bizarre comments in this thread.

Think about this: what do police use for their everyday ammo? Hollow points. Not because of some notion that they don't over-penetrate (which they do with drywall) but because they are generally more effective at stopping threats.

Either accept and mitigate, as well as you reasonably can, the risks that come with defending yourself or don't defend yourself.

1911 loaded with HP is my primary HD weapon. Yeah the drywall here sucks, just like most places. I keep in mind where other members of the family sleep and I regularly practice with my 1911 at ranges that are consistent with what would be engagement ranges in my home.

I can ensure you, at least on the range, that I'm not going to miss a person-sized target at those ranges. I believe that at the moment I would be forced to defend myself and my family I will aim true, even though I will be in fear of my life. It's something we should all consider and come to terms with over and over again in case it does happen. The more prepared you are mentally for it, the better you will perform if/when it ever happens.

As for the 12g: I keep it in the safe, it's too much power for my home under regular circumstances, same with the AR, not to mention a pistol is much more handy to have in residential environments. I'd go for my .357 after the 1911 before I'd pick up a long gun.

The only way you wont put a guy down in a 10x10 room with birdshot is if you're aiming in the opposite direction from the threat. lol

Every time I have the opportunity to respond to this type of thread, the answer to my question is always the same. NO ANSWER!

Give me statistics on legal gun owners using any gun legally in a self defense situation, inside a house, apartment or whatever that injures or kills innocents due to missing the bad guy or blowing through the bad guy. Of course intentional shootings at mistaken innocents would have to be thrown out. Ex: Shooting a family member you did not expect to be home etc. I'm very specific with my question, innocents behind walls.
                                Let's see the numbers.
As responsible gun owners, we tend to worry about things that really don't effect the situation. Am I saying just start spraying? Of course not. Let's be reasonable.
Low recoil 00 9 pellet buckshot will do the job if you do your part.
