Hollow Points vs. Drywall

I had a suicide where a girl shot herself in the head with a .357 revolver (6" barrel) loaded with HP ammo (Not sure on the type). The round went through her head, through a closet door, through the drywall on the backside of the closet, through the drywall in the next door apartment and then into the drywall on the other side of the room in the next door apartment. The round missed a guy laying on his bed by a couple feet. The round completely took off the top of her head, with bits of skull and flesh lodged in the popcorn textured ceiling. So yeah, a HP will penetrate drywall among other things.sigpicComment

Contrary to what movie's and video games have taught, most large animals (human's included) don't just lay down and die after being shot or hit with an arrow. Some do but more often than not they tend to run, or fight a bit before they die.Comment

I wouldn't discount birdshots that quickly, even though for me, I use 12g low recoil 00buckshots for my home defense shotguns.
Here's the spread of those cheap Federal 2.75" #8 shots you can buy at Walmart at 10 yards:

You can see almost everything hit home within a 6x4 inch target area, basically about the size of your face. Those pellets are supersonic, 1180fps if I recall correctly. At this range, you're basically punching the bad guy with a solid wall of lead.
Let's say you live in a bigger house and your shot distance is at 15 yards, here's what the spread looks like using the same shell type and brand:

Granted, punching holes in paper isn't like punching holes in people, and people also wear clothing which may be thick if the weather is cold.
Still, given a choice between a handgun of any caliber or a 12g shotgun loaded with #8 birdshots for home defense, I'll pick the shotgun.Comment

I could take that advice, or the other guy claiming similar experience who said it often didn't do jack, and best case the guy ran away, or I could take the advice of FBI forensics doctors that study it day in day out and stick with something that doesn't leave the decision up to the person's resolve.Since I've actually used it to put a person(s) down before, I'll respectfully disagree. please feel free to present us with your expert opinion. You know, the kind you gain through actual experience.
The only way you wont put a guy down in a 10x10 room with birdshot is if you're aiming in the opposite direction from the threat. lolUp for rent...Comment

A HP that has gone through drywall is almost always an FMJ after. Nothing that will penetrate to human vitals will fail to sail through many walls. Some derp derp with unflavored jello out in the sticks with no temperature control or calibration shot is no more relevant than the milk jug guys (actually far less since you at least know the density of the water). Bird shot might work, but that shouldn't be their decision. Per actual testing on BOT, buckshot showed the least drywall penetration of the loads which would meet defensive use standards by only penetrating 4 full walls. The only suitable indoor residential backstop is the bad guy, and if you miss, you just sent somebody's grandma a package. [/thread]I saw this video:
As I pretty much suspected, an HP round will go through 12 in. of ballistics gel, through 2 sheets of drywall, and continue through another sample of ballistics gel. Drywall is flimsy stuff, afterall.
On this video:
... HP's go through a car door and a plywood board. Everything from 22 through 45.
Seems to me like all that talk about using HP's to prevent over-penetration through walls will give a false sense of security.
I live in a dense apartment complex, and I'm pretty worried.Up for rent...Comment
