I don't know what you mean by "quality", it could mean fit & finish, it could mean survivability under tough conditions, it could mean elegant simple design, it could mean long-term reliability.

    fit, finish,
The Korth revolver wins that one. For single-actions, Freedom Arms.

    and trigger?
A good S&W beats the Python, in particular in terms of shootability per dollar.

Why is the price of Pythons so high? Because the supply is limited (they aren't made any more), and the demand is increasing (because they have reached cult status). There are lots of gun people who have lots of money in their pockets, which drives prices up.

There are several similar cases of collectible guns whose prices have gone astronomical; the Sig P210 is but one example. On that one, the .22LR magazines alone go for about $400 to $500.

Highpower said that if Colt started making Pythons again, the price of older models would go down. It probably would not. Sig-Sauer (not identical to SIG) started making P210s again, and the price of "traditional" P210s did not decrease.

Actually, I said it may, or may not go down. Then I pointed out that older S&W revolvers have still been increasing in price even though they have their classic line.

As you pointed out, whether a particular gun is "worth" what folks are willing to pay for it is a moot point. The market determines the price, not what any one particular individual thinks something should sell for.

I for one and probably a lot more folks than myself who purchased Pythons new had absolutely no inclination as to the future demand and skyrocketing value once Colt discontinued this model.
In my opinion, their value can only increase due to the fixed amount of inventory, the hand fitted craftsmanship and the brand name.
I truly enjoy hefting that loaded 3lb 3oz 6" stainless steel .357 Python for an occasional shoot.
        Not for sale.

To answer the OP, the most resent jump in prices can be attributed to the Walking Dead series. All the sheepel see the Sharif shoot Zombies on TV with a Python and prices take a big jump. Thank You Hollywood!

"The Walking Dead" that's another reason everyone wants a Colt Python.

Sorry for abbreviating your quote to the point that it became a mis-quote. That was sloppy on my part.

if the current proposed laws pass and go into effect, all guns that are not on the california approved roster will no longer be able to be purchased as private party transfers within the state of california.

so even if there are colt pythons in state, if you don't already have one (or two), you'll never be able to own one again. . . . .

so get one while you can. . for that matter get a cobra, detective special, etc. etc. . .

if the laws don't make it through then you got yourself some good guns anyways !
