    Breathtaking!

If I ever end up with more money than I know what to do with I will probably buy a "test fired only" Python to stare at. Getting the above 4" was the top of my list, but now I have other things to knock out before I could start thinking about doubling up on anything.

Does anyone know revolver in current production that is closest to a python in terms of quality, fit, finish, and trigger?

While we are at it, if anyone can recommend a qualified gunsmith to tune up a Python, please let me know. Since I am shooting mine, it's only a matter of time...

Bay area preferred since I will be moving down there this summer, but open to any suggestions.

In terms of trigger, a tuned S&W 686....and that's as close as you'll get. Currently S&W is the 'best' fit and finish but nothing really beats a python.

My 6 inch Model 19 has a better trigger than my 4 inch Python. The Python is excellent but the S&W is just better. That's my reality and I am sticking to it.

I looked for prices lately and saw everything from $1700 and up. Lots of $2k. Hope that helps a little since very few that want to post answer your question. Go to the gun auction site and peruse the pythons listed there to get a feel for models, condition and prices.

A S&W trigger can be made smoother than a Colt. That's why the Smython/Smolt came about in the 80's.

Although some might not like to hear it, Python actions are not the toughest ones going. They get pounded out of time by a steady diet of heavy loads. They are difficult actions to get "just right" but are sweet when so. One of our members is an expert on Python actions but last I heard was not a FFL holding gunsmith so only worked on his own guns. He did some excellent tutorials on calguns. I do not know of anyone in the Bay Area who I would let work on my Python, except the aforementioned calgunner.

Would Colt still know how to service a Python and do Pythons have a lifetime warranty? I'd like to shoot my Python more often, but don't want to shoot it too much due to fear of getting the timing messed up.

I have been wondering just this question since the first of the year. I'm amazed at the prices that they are SELLING for. I'm not a buyer, they don't appeal to me either, it's good we are all different and I'm glad I like economy (S&W's). They are beautiful to look at, but nobody seems to shoot them. I should have purchased when they could be had for just over a $1k and selling them now.

Typically, when you see them for sale, they are mint condition, which tells me they don't get shot and why is that????? I'm hoping that Colt will respond by making them again, maybe then prices would drop..........yeah right

Here is the shooter I picked up a few months ago.......

Here is one that a fella brought in to a local gunsmith to "fix". He wanted to have the barrel replaced because he "damaged" the original barrel. Be ready to shed some tears....The fella admitted to using a hacksaw.

Already heard a few unsolicited comments at various ranges that I overpaid but I would do it again in a heartbeat. First gun I shot was my granddads 4" blue Python and when I close my eyes and think "gun" its the only thing I can see. Well, when he got diagnosed with cancer his second wives kids came up and cleaned out all his possessions. Every gun, every rod, even took his Pendletons! So i never ended up with his Python but made a promise to myself I would replicate it on my own.

Over the years I passed on different finishes or different barrel lengths knowing that one day I would get just what I wanted. I also passed on a NIB (test fired only) 4" blue python because the guy wanted $3,000. I actually had no problem with the price, but I wanted to shoot mine, and felt I should really leave this rare pristine specimen for a safe queen type.

Anyway, picture is not great but here she is:

Serial number indicates 1967 production. Locks up like a vault, and cylinder gap looks great! A bit of finish wear but its not abuse marks, just signs of a well loved and well used Colt... and I got NO problem with that! I have already taken it out half a dozen times. It's everything I hoped it would be.
thats a beautiful revolver and nice story, congrats

I like the python price rises...Its making the Troopers prices go up as well

I just DROS'ed a Python. It may make some of you cringe but I plan to shoot it!

By the serial number it looks to be made in 1980. No box and looks like non-OEM grips? Anyone care to guess what it's worth? I'll keep it to myself what I shelled out
Looks to be in near mint condition, I'd guess around 95%? looks to be an 8" model?

Any other details about it I can get from the serial besides the year it was made?

Would love to find a box and OEM grips for it.
