I usually keep two semin autos ready to do business around the house. Mag loaded inserted in gun chamber empty. I have a small 380 for that discreet mode when answering the door with a not so friendly looking person. Then the Glock 23 w/ a 9mm conversion is my main pistol for home defense. If it appears that I need more firepower the 40 rounds of 9mm should provide me running time to get the 12 gauge shotguns out of the safe.

That is what lawyers are for But there was a story about that posted on here awhile ago, i don't think the guy was convicted. If they have no warrent nor any legal right it is far game but could be a long legal battle. It goes back to the saying its better to be judged by 12 then carried out by 6.

first of all your ability to correctly use a fire arm does not directly translate to your family's ability to do so.

Your first priority is not a gun but living in a relatively secure area - this of course can never be certain but some use your head type thinking is easy enough.

Then your second priority is to secure that location so that intruders are less likely to gain entrance.

Thirdly - if you feel you may accidentally shoot an unannounced cop you should never wield a firearm anyway.

Your final must is a reliable accurate weapon.

It might not be a cop but a family member or neighbor in distress, possibly being pursued.

and cops like criminals work in teams, even if you do shoot one you most likely just ended your life and any possible witnesses IE family members.

This is a not a reflection on police but of human nature itself and the desire not to be caught.

And bullets have un intended consequences, getting into a cross fire situation may harm not only your self but family members as well and they are your first priority.

As far as a flash light it can be seen coming and not only may it distract the person in front of it but you as well will lose your night sight and it may provide a second party the time to interecept or circumnavigate you entirely. So use one sparingly.

IMO a short shotgun with short range ammo is the best bet. I would say birdshot, but certainly choked correctly for less than 25 feet. That way you dont have to be so precise. Having more than that really gets into a huge what if cowboy scenario and makes you more dangerous than "them"

I live in Alhambra so for the most part its safe, but we still have alot of trouble making gangsters lurking around town from neighboring cities, Pasadena, El Sereno, East L.A. etc.... My neighbore across the street has a Ruger KP95 that he keeps locked and loaded at all times for that same reason, however, he doesnt have an insane girlfriend. And for those of you wondering why I stay with an insane girl who I wouldnt put past shooting me with my own gun, the answer is very easy.......I like it
I have always had a rule of thumb to not sleep with someone crazier than myself.

I was a younger man once and a whole lot crazier then too. Boy did I have a crazy GF. So I get your point.

Nowadays, my wife's only somewhat crazy...

wow, lot of lack of thinking things through here. 43% are concerned enough to keep a gun handy, but DON'T chamber a round.
How exactly are they going to do that if they wake up under attack. Or are roused from a dead sleep by shattering glass / wood? Have none of that group considered the increased likelihood of a misfeed / jam under those circumstances?
So there you are, after all the arming, practice, decision to keep a pistol handy, then there you are with a jam as your bedroom door flies open.

You do realize that would not apply to anywhere in the US, right? Sure you could be charged with manslaughter, but as long as you don't incriminate yourself or shoot the guy in the back in this state, get proper legal representation, you'll be fine.

That is a hypothetical future. Sad part is that, that future is present day England.

Same here. As much as I teach them safe gun handling, I just don't trust them yet with a gun. If my kids are like me when I was a kid I sure wouldn't trust them around guns with chambers that are loaded. They are still not strong enough to rack the slide. I rather have revolvers as my standby guns, but they are too easy to load. I've had my 8 year old boy demonstrate to me how to reload my revolvers. He unlatched the cylinder, picked up the speedloader and closed the cylinder. Good boy! We're going to the autos... I'm sure by the time my youngest boy reach the age of 8 I can go back to revolvers. The minimum age for the shooting ranges is 8 and that's keeping me from teaching my kids how dangerous guns can be.

When the carry gun comes off it goes on the dresser next to the bed. As well as the flashlight, handcuffs, extra magazine, and cell phone.
