All good points here. But to keep it simple, I have my HK P2000SK in my IWB holster. When I get ready for bed, I just take my gun out of the holster, place it on the nightstand, undress, and go to bed. When I get up and put on my pants, I just slip it back into my holster. The less fiddeling around the better. I also keep a 12 ga pump shotgun in leaning up in the corner next to the nightstand. It's loaded with 9 rounds, but the chamber is empty. My wife does the same with her Glock 26. We do not have any children living in the house.

But if it's the cops busting in your door [ mistakenly, whatever] they're gonna be coming HEAVY- even though they're in YOUR house freaking out YOUR wife and kids at 4:00 or 5:00 am for no good reason you can think of.

Throwing a shot toward those cops ? Actually even just brandishing a firearm ? I'm betting on an instant ticket to the morgue.
Yes it would likely end badly for me if it were to go down that way but its much more likely to be bad guys then police as I don't use illegal drugs

Neither did any of the folks in the links I posted above. Don't get me wrong, I support and understand why someone would keep a loaded firearm in their home. I get it.

But I could've posted more links like those above all night, till my fingers were bloody, there were that many examples of good folks legally minding their own business, sleeping in their beds when all of a sudden....

I think your argument is misdirected, and probably better served voicing concern over no knock search warrants rather than trying to convince people not to bear in their own home (especially when feeling threatened).

Hmm yeah the death penalty is a proportionate response to illegal possession of chemicals.

You are either hot or not!
I use the same gun I carry everyday. I leave it in the holster next to my bed. I recommend a light attachment.
If you dont carry hot, you might as well not bother and leave the gun locked up.
I cant believe the % of guys here, that leaves it laying around not chambered. Thats your own death sentence!!.
Before you wake up groggy and realize what is going on etc, you dont have time or motorskills to chamber that round. Just leave the gun in the holster if you are affraid of someone pulling the trigger in their sleep.

M&P 45, ready to go with a x300, in a gunvault. I used to keep the chamber empty, but then one night I actually did hear a noise, and I realized that
                    A) between the safe & racking the slide, way too many manipulations
                    B) i have the manual thumb safety - WTF am I doing with an empty chamber too
                    C) if I really am worried the gun 'might go off' then I need a new gun

Please note that others have used this screen name on non-gun related sites, and I am not related to them in any way.

I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything and I have no argument. I'm a gun owner, I believe everyone ought to have a least two.

But a cold calculation of possible outcomes is smart, thinking ahead, and what all of us who keep loaded guns at home need to do.

absolutely. i have never understood why you would keep your HD piece empty unless you are transporting, etc. keep the round chambered and holster up.

i think one of the biggest concerns is the 'comfort level' of having a loaded gun. people feel empowered, yet often are hesitant to do with them what is necessary because of inexperience or fear of doing the wrong thing. pulling the trigger in your sleep or accidentally shooting a family member or some kid on a skateboard in an avoidable circumstance.

lets face it, nobody will be 100 percent prepared for that stuff. so work on what you can control, not what you cant.

yes, your neighbors could be killed. but what are you going to do? take an X ray camera, and mark all the weak drywall areas in your house so you dont over penetrate? "Excuse me mr murderer, could you step to the left, i dont want to kill my neighbors when i blow you away"

                          .
Just wondering, who makes a decent light attachment for a 12ga shotgun bbl ? Has anyone tried this one,

And how would you attach a light to a 1911 that doesn't have a rail ?

                            Home gun defense.

You get woke up out of a deep sleep, you don't want to be remembering where are the bullets.

If your house is dark, you know it, but a intruder doesn't, so keep it dark.

I have a flashlight with a laser on my pistol. Have night sights also, you don't realize how much difference there is until you turn out the lights.

                            Flash light has strobe attachment.

Mag in but not chambered, in a holster on the nightstand.I like it unloaded for my own piece of mind, just one less accident waiting to happen.

I like the neighborhood, but it seems to be getting worse. The problem with having friends that are cops is they know how many home invasions happened down the street from you lastnight.

that would work fine as long as it fit around the tube and the light is picatinny. if you want to use a traditional light without the picatinny, here is a simpler and more robust mount made by Laser Devices.

its slick and low profile. the model labeled "1 inch light mount" as pictured, fits around 1 inch diameter tubes and attaches 1 inch diameter flashlights. although larger or smaller ones can be retrofitted to work easily

for your non picatinny equipped 1911 based pistols, a mount similar to this surefire is what you will need. if this seems too expensive, there are probably several on the market to choose from
