If you want a compact steel 9mm, try the Browning High Power Detective model. High power frames are very strong & easy to get parts for. The detective model kit is like $200.
Never heard of the Browning High Power Detective model till now.

Found a favorable review from a source that is usually pretty well-informed: http://www.gunblast.com/RKCampbell_HighPower.htm

The Browning High Power Detective model sounds like a good compact, assuming it has no built-in weaknesses or design flaws like the 92fs.

Gorgeous S&W's. It is pretty hard to beat a good S&W pistol, IMO. I just ordered a CDC trade-in 6906 that I plan on using on my LTC. Lets just say I am very excited.

This is an incorrect assumption as some Sub-compact guns have a lower lifespan than others and are meant to be carried alot and shot very little.

Another vote for the MK9 (as much as I think Kahr sucks as a company ;-). My PM9 was actually a very fun range gun but is not designed for heavy use. The MK9 would handle about the same but better due to the weight of the frame.

Smith&Wesson 3913's are hard to beat. Have carried mine for 17 years, put thousands of rounds thru it and shoots like it is brand new. They are thin, compact and the grip is big enough to hold onto the gun when shooting.

What do you mean by heavy range use?

What is your ammo budget? 1k of 9mm runs $200. Do you reload?

I would consider anything above 1k rounds/month to be "heavy" but that is just my opinion. I get that number from visiting the range each and every weekend and shooting 250 rounds per trip (25 magazines @ 10 rounds/mag).

For high round count consider that gun parts wear out at a rate depending on what they are made of.

The frame is the part that I think about the most, as it is the part you can't replace without buying a new gun.

Polymer will wear out fastest, but very few guns have polymer load-bearing parts other then .22lr guns. (Glocks have steel rails on a polymer frame, so the frame is not load-bearing)

Alloy will wear out second fastest, with a gun lasting 50-100k rounds, depending on how you treat it. At 1k rounds per month a alloy framed gun's frame will last between 4 and 8 1/2 years.

Steel lasts the longest with the frame lasting 200k+ rounds. Even at 1k rounds/month the frame on a steel gun will last ~16 years.

Other parts, like springs, barrels and magazines wear out at nominal rates depending on the pressure of the ammo and the make/model of the gun. Of these parts only barrels are really expensive.

If you avoid +p ammo then you can get ~30k rounds (2.5 years at 1k/mo) through a pistol barrel in 9mm as long as you don't need competition accuracy.

Look into materials first, then into how you want your manual of arms to work, then that will lead you to determine a manufacturer.

                              I don't know, but I'm happy with my P228.
