Call ranges that rent guns, ask them what handguns get used and abused and just plain work.

Glock will be at or near the top of the list.

The G-19 is the size of most 3.5 in. Bbl compacts.

Same size as the G-23... which (to me) is Perfect.

That's pretty much the definition of the G26... It's not the thinnest or the smallest carry gun made, but the tradeoff is that it shares the practicality and well known reliability of it's bigger brothers.

I shoot mine at the range every time I go, and more than any two of my other pistols combined. It took some dry firing, practice, and some initial frustration, but it's quite possibly the pistol I shoot the smallest groups with, and the gun I hit the 100 yard plate at Angeles Range the most consistently with. Strange, but true. But then again, maybe I'm driven to wring it out.

BigBoyPinoy - Those stainless S&W carry guns are sweet! Never realized Smith made carry size versions of their big service autos. Now if we could get a 10mm S&W in that size...

w german P225; enjoy it at the range, and use it in a defensive role during summer months.

I think the CZ Rami is a good choice, it's strong and compact. I have the Kahr Mk9 and it is simple and sturdy. Recoil is pretty tame too. Being "DA striker only" there are relatively few moving parts.

I suppose because of caliber no one's mentioned a 1911, but the SA EMP is a good choice. Not too much to go wrong with a well made 1911 style pistol.

Thanks. Not sure if SW ever made a compact 10mm. Googlefu! They do make a CS45 which is just as large as a CS40 pictured.

I am with the OP, looking for a good CCW.

I do like the Glock 26 as it is a good weapons system as the magazines are interchangeable if you need to work in the home defense pistol. I do not like the Ruger as it has an external safety.

I am trading out my G19 for a G26 hopefully soon.
