I think there is a lot to be said about training with what you will actually end up carrying. That said, I carry a HK P2000sk in 9mm. It's a great gun, and serves me well.

This gun is unreal. Stunningly accurate, 100% reliable (so far) and I highly doubt it will ever wear out. Where are you located? If you are in the Bay Area you are welcome to try mine out.

I'm a Cz guy (the one that works best for me) but I've also seen the Beretta M9 just take a neglectful beating at my last command. I was on the Ike (heavy corrosive envrionment to say the least) and they'd only use a few M9s to qual people with and I only saw issues when "old duty ammo" was used, ie the frickin bullets were set back in the case a stunning amount. I refused to shoot it and was verbally counseled, the other guys M9s froze solid and they had to clear the range six times during the quals. They were cleaned by dropping them in a 5 gallon bucket of CLP then hung dry. Having said that get a steel Cz and your great grand kids will have a neat pistol to take to the range.

If you shoot an SR9C, you will likely buy one, they are that good. Flawless function, almost as accurate as my better 1911's (even with the short sight radius). No need to buy another gun later.

My second choice would be G26. How can you go wrong with a Glock?

Response to Lead Waster and OP:

Go to your local gun range that provides handguns for rent to patrons.

                            Ask which ones break down.

                            I have done this.

The Beretta 92FS feels great in my hand.

It has huge capacity with full sized magazines.

But there is a piece that gets slammed every time the slide slams back and forth.

This piece cracks and needs to be replaced.

It is the main weakness in the gun.

Ask which guns never break down or break down the least: GLOCK.

If you want the most reliable gun, go to your local handgun range that offers an array of guns and ask these questions.

After you do, report what you find and correct me if I am wrong.

My local range ranks Glocks #1 (Rugers 2nd) and Berettas last.

                            Everything else in between.

The Glock is the beast that keeps attacking when all others have broken down.

A compact Glock is what you seek. (Or maybe an all metal S&W as the BigBoyPinoy suggests--but my local range does not have the 3913 or similar models/calibers).

Glock 19 or 26. The polymer frame should never wear out or crack. If something happens to Glock will take care of it. Glock has the best warranty in the industry & puts all others to shame.

If you want a compact steel 9mm, try the Browning High Power Detective model. High power frames are very strong & easy to get parts for. The detective model kit is like $200.
