She knew exactly what I was doing when I told her to stay in the room and call 911 and tell them we have an intruder if she heard any shots.

nah, i hear weird noises in my backyard, i jump up, throw on a towel and grab my .45 and a flashlight..

my wife laughs at me, except the one time that the ghetto birds were all over our neighborhood and a couple of times the spots swept our backyard, i heard something get knocked down in the back.. then she told me to get the .45.. turned out it was the cat.. but you can never be to cautious

I’m going to be devil’s advocate. If you knew it was only your girl and yourself in the apartment you should have stayed in the room together ready to protect yourselves. Had it really been an intruder and you shot him, I wonder how that would look, especially in CA. If you stayed in your room, you’re cornered and can argue you were protecting life. If you go looking for him, your life was not immediately in danger; it would be harder to argue that you were in fear of your life versus protecting your property. That's our wonderful state.

Yeah, I met her for lunch and we talked it through and I showed her the responses here. Shes good now and wants to do some training in case she needs to defend the home, not sure if that is a good or bad thing (joking).

I agree with this time, my only exception is I do not usually have my gun handy when I check something out. I wait for the neighbors dogs to bark, then Ill get my gun, but it is usually another wild animal in our case. I live alone with my wife as well. If I had a roommate, they would have to be okay with firearms. But, then I would be skeptical about my roommate knowing I have guns. It would have to be someone I really trust.

Sounds about right, but you're asking this on a gun forum, not an angry girlfriend forum. It's not like you pointed the gun at her. I've answered my door with a pistol in my hand many times. Better safe than sorry. Maybe the roommates GF can send you a text or something before she randomly comes over.

Well, can't take the property managers key. The girlfriends need one as we share custody of a dog the neighbor has never been in the apartment, its a just in case key. I have one to his place.

See that's the problem - you need to withhold priviliges from her, rearrange the balance of power ....

But regarding the issue at hand, I think your reaction was proper. I think I would have told the GF upstairs to call 911, in that sense it could be said you "under-reacted".

Sorry but get those keys....no other way about it. Hate to keep bringing it up :/. But theres way to many people with easy access that you dont know super well. The idea of a dead bolt is good too, simply because the landlord cant walk in any time of day/night.

But yea, this is a security issue. Glad it was not a bad guy.
