    Did I over react.

So my area has had a few break in's of late. I was in bed last night with my girlfriend. I heard someone walking around. I have a room mate but he is away with work.

I know a total of 6 people have access to my apartment (me, my gf, my roommate, his girlfriend, a neighbor we leave our spare key with and our property manager)

I knew me and my gf where in my room, my property manager has to give notice so that left my roommate coming home early, his gf drunk and deciding she wanted to stay local rather than driving home and my neighbor.

So out with my flashlight and .40 to check what it was, turns out roommates girlfriend stopped by to sleep over cause he was getting an early flight and she was collecting him from SFO and she lives in Santa Rosa.

When I got back to the room my girlfriend gave me a lot of grief for over reacting. We talked about it this morning and she is cool now, but did I over react? I don't think so. Her take on it, is that if I have to grab a gun to check a noise, I am living in to dodgy an area and need to move. I told her this would be how I would check out a noise if we lived in a "nicer" area.

    What say the peanut gallery?

You're arguing with your girlfriend, it doesn't matter what calguns says, you are still wrong. You took the better safe than sorry route. Had it been a break in you would have been the knight in shining armor, but it wasn't so you clearly over reacted [sarcasm].

We'll say you took appropriate measures considering the circumstances, she'll say you're a gun toting maniac wanting to shoot anything you disagree with. Good luck man.

Well, can't take the property managers key. The girlfriends need one as we share custody of a dog the neighbor has never been in the apartment, its a just in case key. I have one to his place.

Trust me I tried getting the key of the girlfriend, but she withheld privileges

No over reaction. The roomie should have told you about anyone else coming over to stay without him there, that would just be polite. Roomies GF should have called.

Here's my CSB. My wife and I were bathing the girls when they were babies, as we were drying them up and putting diapers on them, I hear a scratching at my front door, followed by the door opening! I freak out because I'm holding a naked baby and my wife is putting pj's on my other daughter, my heart is racing and then I hear my STUPID MOTHER IN LAW say something. She came in the house using the key we gave her as a spare, but she didn't knock or call or anything, she just walked in like it was her house.

My mind was racing as to what to do, it came up with "put the baby down on the bed and grab that big maglite". I don't keep guns outside of the safe with my kids around.

She got a good chewing out for not knocking. I was about to have a fricken heart attack!

            end of CSB.

Bottom line is that you are a resident there, your roomate should tell you when other people are going over without him.

You did NOT overreact. I wonder what your GF would say if it wasn't your roomie's gf, and a burglar, who caught you unprepared and was doing *whatever* to either of you because you underreacted.

No, you can't take the PM's key, but you can put in a "hotel door lock" on, that locks only from the inside (like that door chain thingy) so that people can't come in at night without knocking, or you can leave it off if your roomie is still out partying. But if you are not expecting anyone, then you can leave that lock on. And maybe put a lock on your bedroom door, so that even if you are expecting your roomate to come in late and it turns out to not be your roomate, you are still "safe" in your bedroom to the extent that someone would have to shoulder the door down to get at you...and get a face full of glock muzzle.

Your only mistake was not grabbing a shotgun.

Did you overreact? I think absolutely not. In fact, whenever my inside dogs bark, within secones I've got my pistol holstered (if it's not already), a flashlight in hand, and I'm checking out the window.

                          Seems perfectly fine to me.
I would have been alittle more verbal.
                          Maybe ask "Who's there?".
If it was an assailant they might have left.
If not I have my gun anyways.

... your girlfriend? or his girlfriend?

I agree - if you were going to go clear - I would have shouted out "WHO'S THERE!" with shotty in hand. I'm going to guess you're a safe person, but what if she was in her room and as you passed by the door quickly opened it, startling you?
But of course, method of clearing a house is widely debated.

This is exactly what my wife would say. I'd have to agree with "OutlawStar". You're always going to be on the loosing side of the argument.

Although...were your carrying in condition 1? Because if you think about it...if you're going to get grief, your HD gun might as well be in a ready state for it to be worth it.
