I would have done the same thing.

With that said...you do have an issue or two that needs to be resolved...immediately.

I live alone so it's obviously my rules without any discussion. I know who has keys (very limited) and you can bet that I sit them down and have a very frank discussion with them about when they are to use that key and what they will encounter if they ever decide to use it unannounced...and the risks associated with that action. Nobody has an issue with it. I choose my friends carefully.

You've got a roommate which ads another dimension to this. In the spirit of, "keeping the peace," the best approach is to sit him down and see if the two of you can come to agreement on how you handle keys, who has them, how they will be used (and when), and the instructions/warning that will be given to those people.

Your Roomie needs to know how close his girl came to getting shot because nobody had the common sense or basic respect to tell you that she was coming over. Even if guns weren't involved, it's not cool for anyone (even a GF) to just use a key and come on in unannounced.

Please do this before someone gets hurt.

Castle Doctrine applies, you have the right to protect your person as well as your domicile. Investigation that leads to a fatal shooting of an invader that comes after you in your home is justified, as would be subduing the invader and holding them at gunpoint until the cops arrive.

Just don't wound them and let the courts decide a he said / she said.....

The one time you think "naw I'm overreacting" may be the time you get one pulled over on you. Besides, not always being on your game could make you lax when it really counts.

As long as you don't pull a gecko45 and bust out the vest with trauma plates and ceramic plates on top of that you should be good.

Use caps for emphasis I GET THE WHOLE KEY THING. Now that being said, I have taken the key back from the neighbor, my property manager still has a key, but always gives 24 hr notice. Can't take the roommates key back and I don't and won't take it back from my gf. So his gf gets a key too. This is not going to change.

Further I did not nearly shoot her, the gun was never pointed at her. I swept the room and pointed the gun in a safe direction as soon as I realized who it was and before it was taken to bare on her.

I added the "" face, but I guess it didn't help, hehehe.

Usually, I would expect someone to refer to a gf as "my girlfriend", not "the girlfriend". As you can understand, using "the girlfriend" could be interpreted as his or roommate's (since those were the only 2 individuals identified in his story). But, I'm no English major... just trying to joke around

I'd rather have it and NOT need it than need it, and NOT have it.

                    Imagine a different scenario...

You hear someone come into your house. Your girlfriend is over. She says, "Oh it's dude's girlfriend. Go say hi!" You go out there without a gun because she has already made it clear that she'll withhold the poon if you take it with you. When you get to the living room you say hi to the girlfriend but there is no answer. She must be drunk and asleep. You look around and make contact with one of those classic robbers with a black turtleneck, a mask, and a bag. He notices you and comes at you. Something is in his hand. Your defense is, "Sorry, let me run back to my room so I can get my gun out of my safe." . . .

I greet every suspicious noise with a gun in my house. My girlfriend would never think of telling me to do otherwise. We have both had our property vandalized/stolen in the past though.

You're missing the point. "Caps for emphasis"...THIS NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED. And not because you gave out too many keys.

Others have to have keys. That's a given. She came in unannonuced because somebody wasn't thinking and somebody didn't do their due diligence to ensure she understood the possible ramifications of coming in unannounced.

Whether or not she "nearly got shot" is a matter of semantics. Ok, gun was never pointed at her but having someone come to check you out with a gun in hand because they have no idea who you are is a lot closer to getting shot than normal. It's certainly a lot closer than I would ever want to be. Why take that chance?

You seem to be focusing on the number of keys that are out. Ideally you would live alone and have a lot less keys out. But life isn't always ideal. I for one don't think you have a lot of keys out under the circumstances. But given those circumstances, you failed to take proper precautions. You failed to lay down ground rules for use of the keys and you failed to educate the key holders of the risks involved in using those keys.

To that end, we've heard you say that you've taken a key back. But we haven't heard you say anything about sitting down and having a discussion with your roomie and the key holders.

Look, I'm not judging you. You posted this because you wanted feedback. I'm sorry if you were expecting everyone to tell you that you did everything right.

                      Peace

I had a relative of my wife in my sights once. No one told me they were coming over to stay the night at 1:30AM we lived in San Bruno at the time so people always used to spend the night before or after flights if they lived far away. Good thing they were blinded by the light............I was naked............

As long as you were safe and smart with the pistol, I say you did well. I live in a nice area and people get robbed regardless of city. My uncle's million dollar neighborhood has had armed robberies and he is always packed or within a moments notice when things go bump.

People always complain (no offense to your lady) until they need help.

My house is my house. My family lives here, but I set the rules. You need to agree to a set of rules with the roomate, but a girlfriend can hit the road if she doesn't follow house policy.

Holy god. Did you read the thread? I was trying to get people to move on from the number of keys out there. I also was not expecting people to say I did everything ok. I took what people said and I have acted on it. I have removed one set of keys out there, going to add verbal notification if I ever am in this position again and I have discussed it with my roommate and GF.
