last time i cleaned my AR was because i noticed that i had a weird buildup in the comp.. i ended up with 3 lifesaver size chunks of carbon poping out of it.. only one broke when i pryed it out the other two fell onto the table.. one rolled onto the floor and rolled into the kitchen.. ive still yet to have a malfunction that wasnt caused by bent mag lips or crappy ammo.. i use a lot of grease and from time to time i will wipe down the bolt and relube but other than a few passes with a bore snake thats about it..
i cleaned my glock the other day when i put in a 3.5lb connector and changed out some springs.. well.. i cleaned the barrel.. everything else just sorta got wiped down by my fingers while i was touching it..
my .22s get cleaned after every range trip because those do start to malfunction.. only time i ever cleaned my shotgun was the day i bought it.. i pulled a patch through it and the third one came out clean so good enough for me.. the chamber is free of gunk and chunks so no point on fixin what isint broken..

my HD gun is cleaned after each range trip just cuz i feel like i should
Boy the way Glen Miller played, songs that made the hit parade, guys like us we had it made, those were the days, and you know where you were then, girls were girls and men were men, mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again, didn't need no welfare states everybody pulled his weight, gee our old Lasalle ran great, those were the days!

    who wants a fishtank?

Clean after every range trip but only run a bore snake thru it along with a couple of clean patches. You will do more harm than good with excessive cleaning than running it dirty.

Try cleaning it and NOT cleaning it. See what happens. That will get you to know your gun more than religiously cleaning it.

I clean my guns after each use, it is good preventive maintenance. After all I have never heard of a malfunction caused because the gun was to clean.

No, I don't clean after every range trip, and I shoot about 150-200 rounds every trip. I'll take the chances that if the gun went bang the 400 times before, it will most likely go bang the next 10 times if I need it in a defense situation.

You prematurely wear your parts by excessive cleaning. If someone takes their gun out to the range once a month and puts 100 rounds through it, it's likely that all of the wear on the gun will be from cleaning and not from actually shooting.

This is about when I clean my range guns.

While we're here arguing about the latest high tech running shoes, there's some Kenyan out there running barefoot. Guess who's gonna win the marathon?

So, does everyone also change their car oil after every trip, even if they just start it up in the morning to make sure it still works?

Cleaning your firearms should be like changing the oil in your car. Do it on a calendar basis or after so many rounds. Over cleaning is just putting wear on your parts, and wasting your time and money. I'll put hundreds of rounds through my Glocks or AR and not notice any buildup when I go to clean them.
chaps my hide when people use the car oil analogy.
when my firearm has constant pressurized oil flow at all times AND and a filter then I will do the lazy pig type cleaning.

My FNH manual states on page 35 "A good rule is to clean and lubricate the pistol after each use or in the case of intensive shooting, after every 300 rounds. Correct maintenance will enhance the longevity of your pistol".

It's fairly accurate, except changing your oil every day doesn't increase the wear on your engine.

Run grease on your guns if you're worried about lube.

                          negative, again.

nylon bristle brushes and cloth rags do NOT wearout metal. nor does taking them apart.
the only way your parts are wearing out from cleaning is if your using a dremel polish wheel or grinder.

I clean em when I feel like it. My AR has now done 2351 round with 1 jam at 2344, which was either a light primer strike or bad ammo. I still havent cleaned, because I dont feel like it. Im afraid to admit to how many rounds my G19 has seen before cleaning.

I can do 300 rounds in an hour at the range if I'm really going at it. There's just no way I'm cleaning my gun after only 300 rounds. 500+ rounds and I may clean my handguns just because it gives me something to do.

I've been cleaning my AR after each trip because I've been shooting Russian ammo and I wanted to see if the rumors were true. So far they aren't.
