    Shoot, clean, repeat.

It ws drilled into me by my father that the only excuse for having a dirty gun was being in the middle of a fight, and any man that left a gun dirty, wasn't.

He ran more than one individual out of the shop that brought in a dirty piece.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

But seriously, I don't think that it should take longer than 5 mins to do a routine cleaning on your piece. Maybe you do a deeper cleaning once or twice a year. The less one is exposed to those noxious chemicals, the better.

I'm sure if you looked there'd be a website for that.

+1 on the lead. Working up handloads I usually find some combo that leaves half the cast boolit in the bore...

why clean? the dirt is protective

ahhah.. I clean about every 1000 rounds, or if i start getting malfunctions, I do lube often as lube is the great protector of all things dirty. My .22lr guns especially don't run as well until they are dirty, at least 100 rounds. I'm trying militec now, interested in its impregnating qualities so I can clean even less. I also just started using nylon toothbrushes, man its so good, way better than trying to ungrime with q-tips. I don't think nylon should hurt anything.

I'm a bit anal.... I clean every firearm after its been shot, be it a box or a case. Some say over cleaning is a bad thing, all I know is that when I pick up one of my guns I can count on it going bang! This gives me peace of mind....

I always clean after each range trip, just an ingrained habit.

I think it really depends. What kind of ammo you're shooting and the extent of how you're cleaning. I've read in various articles that overcleaning can increase wear on certain parts (mainly the bore). I'm guessing it mostly has to do with what kind of barrel you have in combination with your solvents+other cleaning methods.

I do at least a field strip, wipe down and re-lubing every range trip and do a more thoroughly cleaning with solvents, etc. every other. I shoot mostly Federal.

Same here - although I have a Winchester 190 (actually a Sears Mod 3T) - NOT fun to take apart. I usually remove the trigger assembly, clean around the action and clean the barrel.

You hit the nail on the head with this post. Well said.

                      It really depends on:

                      What firearm your shooting.

                      What ammo your using.

What solvents and brushes are being used.

What parts are you cleaning and disassembling.

Whether you fire 1 round or 1,000 round a firearm should be cleaned after every range trip. A firearm is a tool and you should take care of your tools. (Advice giving to me many years ago and it has served me well.)

Depends which gun. my AR, shotguns, revolver, yes every trip, although I may stop cleaning my AR so often, just maybe run a boresnake every time.
my m&p, i've cleaned it once. going to see how it does in the 2000 round challenge

My glocks get wiped down and oil on the slide and barrel after every range use. Every few months I will give it the drop of oil in the frame. My glock I use for self defense will get detail stripped after every range use and the normal oiling.
