REALLY? so can you tell me what happened in Jan. 17, 1994, April 18, 1906, or Feb. 9, 1971 here in california? if you dont then this is what happened:

April 18, 1906 -San Francisco -3,000 killed, $524 million in property damage, including fire damage
Jan. 17, 1994 -Northridge -61 killed, $15 billion in damage
Feb. 9, 1971 -San Fernando -65 killed, $50 million in damage

and thats just 3 random examples of natural disasters. now, when your entire city is demolished, does that not count as sh*t hitting the fan????? seriously. what do you think happens after a disaster like this? hmmmm looting, stealing, breaking into homes, people shooting each other over stupid things. if you do not what to be ready for something bad to happen, its your business, but dont come onto this thread and call people "crazy" for wanting to protect themselves in case something happens. if you ask me, your the one thats for not being ready for the worst. im sure there were people at the mayor disasters above like you.... not ready and running around looking for help from the people.

Yes, it's crazy. Did most (if any) people need firearms during the quakes? No. Am I looking to supply a militia? No. I enjoy my video games as much as the next person, but do I feel like I should be ready to live-action one of them? No. In the rare event that someone tries to take advantage of some sort of temporary post-disaster confusion will what I already have in my house suffice? Yes. If it comes down to some sort of "apocalyptic" situation we're boned anyway and a few extra thousand rounds and boxes of MRE's aren't going to save you.

      *edit* let me illustrate:

Do you have a bunker built in some secluded area for said situations? Do you bullet-proof your cars? Do you check to see if your brake lines were cut every time you get in your car? Do you start your engine remotely in case of a car bomb? Do you wear bulletproof vests all day? Do you check your stove every time before you turn it on? Do you have drums of fuel stocked up in your house? What if someone poisons you at your favorite restaurant? What if your water filtration stops working, check your pipes/dig a well! Come on already.

Take away the electricity tonight with an EMP followed by the stopping of the pumps that provide water a few weeks later and how well will you fair? Are you going to wait for FEMA and the Govnmt to rescue you? Folks who live in Hawaii prepare for hurricanes all the time so they know the deal but folks in the mainland in general are all unprepared and the weak will suffer. Whats the old saying? Luck favors the prepared.
Exactly! clean water is #1. Without that, your guns/ammo are useless. I have a 50gal barrel drum (plastic) stored in my garage. With the proper amount of chlorine it has a self life for about a year or so.

Most people have water heaters. That is a good source of quick water to get you by, when you run out or don't have any available.

Believe it or not. California is due for a major earthquake. By "major" I mean a 8.0 or higher. We have not had one in over 100yrs. It's a fact! In the geology time frame, there is supposed to be one every 30-40yrs, and we haven't had any.

People don't die from earthquakes per se, they die from lack of resources, ie., food, water, and explosions of gas lines, just like San Bruno. Now imagine that state wide......

          How long can you survive??

its useless talking to you, since you obviously just highly exaggerated everything im saying.

            1. so by what your saying, you will purposely not have any kind of firearm to protect yourself or loved ones since police will be sitting next to a phone, waiting to receive your distress call when you need them.
            2. you are not going to have more the 50 rounds in your home since more then 50 rounds means you have enough to arm a militia.
            3. you will not have any extra food stored away since after huge disasters grocery stores stay open and fully stocked with food.
            4. your secretly paranoid about your break being cut???

conclusion, like I said before, you do what you want, its not my business, but there are several people that have said its good to be prepared. its just common sense!

I'm merely pointing out that if you're boned, you're boned. There's an infinite number of things that could happen to you or all of us at any time any day. It's pointless to obsess and worry about every little scenario. I think most people have enough stuff in their house to get them by for a couple weeks as-is (water/food).

I have firearms, yes. Do I carry in my house? No. Am I going to risk going to jail etc. just so I can "always be prepared?" No. Will I be fine during a home invasion? Maybe, maybe not. I don't have combat experience, I haven't taken tactical handgun classes. However, other than taking a tactical handgun class for FUN I think my situation regarding home defense will remain unchanged. Even people who are "prepared" don't always come out OK in these situations. And you know what? My wallet and I are completely fine with that.

Heart disease/attack, diabetes, and smoking are all exponentially more likely to occur to the average Calguns member than any of these threads. Do Calguns members sign up for gym memberships? Do they quit smoking? Do they eat healthier? Addressing any of these issues would be a better use of time/money no?

dont get me wrong, I know what your saying. being prepared can be expensive sometimes. and people to take it over the line sometime. but my opinion is, if i have to spend a few buck to raise my odds of survival, im gonna spend a little on that. I wont have use for money if something happened to me. (god forbid)

                  HAHAHA!

                  I absolutely agree with you.

Like most gun owners, the majority of people are law abiding and moderately tempered folks. It's the criminals (the 5%-10% of the population that road-rages, robs, or rapes) you've gotta worry about and let's face it, we have to worry about them all the time (especially depending on where you live).

2012 will have a small handful of loonies, suicide cults, and whackos - but they'll be outnumbered by regular folks who will worry more about getting to work on time January 1st 2013 than storm clouds on December 21... who, coincidentally, might be bummed they spent so much money on crates of bottled water

What you said about our December 31 is pretty much what their calendar is doing. They have three calendars, refined from an earlier Mesoamerican calendar. They have a 260 day ritual/religious type calendar named Tzolkin, the 365 day Haab calendar which is pretty much a typical solar year calendar, and the Long Count calendar.

It is the Long Count calendar that doomsday whackos are claiming says the world will end in 2012.

The Long Count calendar counts from the day of their religion/myth's Creation of humans (year zero, day one) and uses the number Zero as a place holder. Like a car's odometer, December 2012 will simply turn over another "place holder," or zero, on the Mayan Long Count calendar - which due to a design flaw cannot go into the next odometer reading. It doesn't mean we're headed for the zombiepocalypse.

The Long Count calendar starts from mythic Creation, which by calculating backward was sometime around 3100 BCE according to Mayans. We all know the world didn't start in 3100 BCE (modern science dates the earth as 4.5 billion years old), so who cares about their Long Count calendar?! Besides even ancient Maya calculated events after 2012 (like anniversaries of historic events) and didn't view 2012 as the end of the world.

There will be an amazing coincidence in astronomical movements in our solar system converging on "doomsday" Dec 21, 2012, but this might be in part due to the Mayan development of timekeeping and calendars. Independent of the Old World (Europe, Africa, Asia, anywhere not in the Americas) the Maya developed the mathematical number zero. Their astronomy was advanced as well. Since their methods for keeping time were based on astronomy, this coincidence of solar movements and calender calculations may therefore stem from the correlation between the two.

All of this advancement in astronomy and the Maya were still pretty much a "Neolithic" society (Stone Age) - they only had stone tools (no bronze or iron), they had not invented the wheel yet, and their math had not developed to the point of algebra or calculus. Cultural developments, science, and technology do not develop linearly or at the same pace in all societies.

So "2012" is meaningless in reference to the sun's alignment to the galactic core.
