Am I storing ammo wrong?

Ammo from multiple stores. And no not using wd-40 on guns almost exclusively using frog lube grease and oil. And clp for cleaning.

I was thinking about vacuum sealing. Took out several guns rifles and pistols and, only thing they have in common is where the ammo is stored and lube. But they all had a few bad primers

There's a reason the military - and MOST of us here - use, "ammo CANS."

Calguns was smitten when Frog Lube was first on the market...suckered in similarly to the Moisin group buy. It's currently more or less hated...but if you're ignorant enough to put amusement ride lube in a gun, practical experience will help your understanding.

You will get arguments from the FL suckers lovers that you undoubtedly didn't apply it "correctly".


As posted above, FL was love at first sight...it was actually invented by an actual SEAL operator, operating operationally.

Frog Lube is almost pure coconut oil per the tests of frog lubes properties.

And that's OK

At least anecdotally, it is definitely NOT OK.

If it were "OK", it would have been purchased by the military or LE...yet no purchase orders I can find up to now.

Yup. Frog Lube is the likely culprit. Having problems in winter more or less confirms it. That stuff is like molasses in cold weather and will really screw things up.

Use a real gun lube and throw that Frog Lube away.

So went to the range today and had a ton of failed rounds, factory and reloads. The primers failed to go off, on multiple guns, rifles, pistols different calibers. None of the rounds are over 3 years old. I store my ammo on a shelf in my house so do i need to do something different?

I've stored mine on shelves in the house and garage for years without ftf. I don't use ammo boxes unless its delivered in them.

1) Regarding Froglube. 1 shot and it MELTS off whatever it is on.

2) You're Not suppoe to mix FL and oil. Use one or the either.

Used FL when it first came out. Went back to regular CLP/Oil after I ran out.

Yeah just order online and have them delivered like I do.

I got Cal Army/Navy about 45 minutes down the road. I just take the big rig down to them, and bring 'em back.

I agree that it sounds like your lube is the culprit, as 3 years isn’t a long time by ammo standards. I found a paper bag full of shotgun shells that had been sitting in a garage for about 50 years and every round fired just fine.

Thanks guys after reading and doing some research. Maybe the lube was a problem. How do you guys feel about the Lucas clp and gun oil?

This. Frog lube, cold weather, gummed up firing pin channel.

This is exactly what happened to my 1911. Frog lube gummed up the firing pin and it got stuck. I exclusively use Lucas CLP for cleaning and Lucas Oil for lubrication now.

I just watched a video on Forgotten Weapons where Ian fired a bunch of 30-06 made in Ethiopia in the mid-1970's, stored in paper boxes and a wooden box the whole time, likely in desert temperatures for most of it's life.

The ammo worked fine.

My buddy just had a couple guns refinished. The guy who reassembled them packed the striker assembly with grease. Light strikes everything till he figured it out. Frog lube is the consistency of chapstick. I’d use aything before using chapstick to lube my guns, accept frog lube.

THIS - I've had ammo sitting around 30+ years and it still goes bang. You need to find something common to all your guns and that is the Frog Lube. Hoppe's No9 session with all your guns is in order.

Just use the frog lube to wipe outside of gun, wipe on wipe off to protect from rusting. Only thing I'd use it as a lube with is muzzleloaders and cap n ball pistols, but I've never bought any, make my own.

My guess is the Seal dude that invented FL seen how good the stuff he used to make it prevents rust with muzzleloaders and started using it, then came up with a catchy name that played on his being a Seal to make money with it.

Either use correctly or clean your guns often, because it will gum up after awhile of being exposed to air.
