Meanwhile, some people lost loved ones in fires and floods, and houses and lives got destroyed.

You don't need to modify the slide stop, if you are using force to get it in you're doing it wrong. When the slide is in the proper position the slide stop should drop in with light pressure. My Colt Combat Commander and Kimber Eclipse Custom II assemble with ease.

Some slide stops don’t need the mod, just a matter of the relationship of the slide stop plunger and the beveled edge of the slide stop. My NH, RIA and Caspian don’t have it. My SAs and Colt does.

Not necessarily. Some plungers stick out too far, some don't fit the plunger tube well, some have more play than others. Bottom line, many o scratches are not just a result of dragging the SS head on the frame whereas it would have been easy to avoid, but a result of having to fight the plunger.

The SS "Log Man Mod" is by far the best mod there is for SS. It is easy to do and makes a reassembly independent of how badly the plunger fights.

I might wet-sand it with 1000 grit, for now I think I'm going to leave it alone. The scratch is very light behind the trigger and almost unnoticeable after using Flitz, but the part you can see in the pic is still visible.
Here is a trick for wet sanding fine work. Use contact cement(spray works really well) glue 1000-1200 grit wet or dry to a popsicle stick. After it dries use that to wet sand with the grain. The stick gives enough backing to allow smooth even strokes pressures for blending. If you just use a finger and wet or dry it will be difficult to smooth as your finger will fall into the scratch.

Don't listen to LSG! Your gun is going to blow up like Hiroshima!

Just joking OP Next time, cut a little piece of old credit card as a guard when you put your slide stop back in.

Or get your slide stop notched by a gunsmith...

My remedy was to kick myself about it for 5 minutes then suddenly come to the revelation that I should just ignore it and live a happier life. Which is what I did.

Well, here's the thing. Since the scratch is already there, you don't have to care if you re-scratch it! Win-win!

So why would you fix it and be paranoid and careful about it. Just leave it and be happy!

My RIA slides in like buttah. My TRP ... with everything lined up nicely, I can SEE that it's not going to just slide in. It WILL if I add some force to it, or sometimes I'll us a think blade and just push the plunger in a bit.

I'm actually thinking that the plunger thing is too long... but that's how it came with the gun.

So ... not all will just slide in even with perfect alignment.

3m contour surface sanding pad. Super fine, follow factory pattern, front to back.

                              I share your agony.
This summer I dropped my G26 and, no that was last summer.
But the slide was, no, i think it was ok.
Oh, the magazine floorplate got a flat spot on it.
I posted a thread about it and everyone was either sympathetic or mean.
No, I think I just put it back in my holster shirt and didn't think about it until now.
                              Yeah, that was it.

Don’t feel bad. I put an idiot scratch on my very first 1911. I’ve owned several more 1911’s in the years since then without putting an idiot scratch on them. I considered myself a pro. A few weeks back I bought a Springfield 9mm Loaded 1911 just like yours. Wouldn’t you know it, I put an idiot scratch on it too. I’ll try to sand and buff it out eventually, but if it doesn’t come out, whatever.
