The loads selected for .44 mag are a serious handicap

Stoke them with 300 grain hard cast bullet and it will penetrate virtually anything you need it to.

Any kind of hollowpoint as defense against dangerous game is not something i'd like to risk.

maybe im off here but, in california when hunting you must have non lead ammo only(condor zone now but in 2019 its whole state) and to hunt legally bulletts must be hollow point or expanding. any ideas on this?

I have a thought on that - our lawmakers are morons

As far as complying, I have no idea. There aren't really any hollowpoint non-lead handgun rounds that would be effective on big game. At least none that I've found.

Also, to make matters even worse, you can't just use any non-lead ammo, it has to be specifically certified by DFW https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Hunting/...tion/Certified. Yes, that's right, now you have both a handgun roster and an ammo roster.

The Lehigh all-copper expanding handgun bullets are approved, but they don't look like they'd be a good choice for big game. Note that only the bullet itself needs to be on the approved list - the rest of the cartridge can be made by anyone. That also means that anything approved in .40s&w is automagically approved for 10mm as well since it's the same bullet.

At any rate, shooting a bear with any expanding handgun bullet seems like a bad idea to me - handgun bear hunting will likely disappear in CA by 2019. Another victory for the left.

Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

been shooting hogs with nonlead 44 mag handgun for i think 7 years now. i dont like it but i like being ticketed or arrested and fined a lot less. that and 3 hunting violations and your liscense is gone for 10 years. and trust me from experience its easy to get 3 different hunting violations for one run in with a warden. and if i remember right come 2019 the law just says non lead and looses the list approoved by the state. also as i hunt with dogs solid bulletts make for more pass thrus which is a real bad deal.

In over 55 years of horse packing and hiking I have only shot one snake that would not budge and the horses needed to pass, we did need to shoot a lion that wanted to jump a picket line of horses in the 60's, .45LC, but it was later deemed rabid. I really am not concerned with natural wildlife, but the nuts and criminals that is another subject, last time I had my family up on the fringe of a wilderness area, the next week they rounded up 80 criminals, the locals told me it was really dangerous off grid in that part of the forest.

But I figure if I'm going to be shooting a snake, it's not really a matter of urgency (they aren't that fast), so I carry some snake shot in a spare magazine when I'm in snake country. If I see a snake I want to shoot (for food), I'd eject my mag and chambered round, and chamber a snake load. I can't think of a scenario where someone would ever need to shoot a snake in self-defense. It either already bit you before you even saw it, or you saw it in time and got a safe distance away from it. Rattlers don't really have much of a tendency to chase you down

As an aside, I don't really believe in shooting a buzzworm unless it's for food. Otherwise I just let it go, they're the good guys, kind of like honey bees! Last summer there was a baby rattler hanging around my campsite one weekend. He never bothered me - I knew where it was, and it knew where I was. I had a chambered snake load in my sidearm the whole time, but never felt the need to shoot it. It was just minding its own business, and it was kind of cute I just had a long talk with my son about keeping his distance from the snake and watching where he stepped, and left it at that.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife manages California's diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and for their use and enjoyment by the public.

As far as I know, if a bear or mountain lion is hunting you, you don't need non-lead ammo to stop them.

I think you are talking about the dust cover, yeah all glocks are like that and curve up a little, it is just less noticeable on the smaller glocks.

I agree it does not look good, H&K's look way better as an example with the polymer frames being straighter.

I'm fast on the draw... but jumping out the way of a snake has always been a faster solution for me than slappin leather ...... despite how fast I may be.
I remember shooting a snake with the BB gun as a little kid ...... things did not go as planned and I only stopped running about a month ago

Underwood Xtreme Penetrators are non-lead (all copper). I suspect it would make a good bear defense round.
