I have handguns in 10mm and 44 Magnum. I'm not sure how you can pick the 10mm over the 44 Magnum for penetration, speed and power. There is no 300 grain bullet available for the 10mm. I'm not saying the 10mm is not powerful enough against a black bear, but I'd rather use 200 grain bullets with the 10mm for tough heavy boned dangerous animals. The wise man said just find your place

For big animals- look for momentum. Mass times velocity
Shooting a water buff in africa- big heavy solid bullets- slow
Speed and bullets breaking up / not retaining weight is correlated
The depth of penetration is a cross sectional density formula, much more than just foot pounds.
I have shot mild steel tubing where a .45, 9mm, and 38 dented the steel. A 44 mag went through both sides- more mass, more velocity.
The 10mm is good for game if- and only if- you find 10mm ammo that is loaded to 10mm spec.
The semi auto is easier to carry and conceal than a 6" 44 mag.
The 460 Rowland is awesome as it mimics light 44 mag loads but it need a brake... so your hearing can / will be damaged....Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

I own both 10mm & 44 Magnum revolvers and a semi 10mm and not invested in "which is better?". Just a few observations -
I've been too close to a bear while carrying a 44 Magnum revolver, it happened to be a 3" Smith & Wesson. It's amazing how undergunned you feel with any handgun and even a modest sized black bear - this one was about 450 lbs.
I noticed the chart shows up to 240 grain bullets for the 44 Magnum. It ought to show the heavier and solids too, for a better comparison.
I'm curious as to where the charts came from. And note some interesting figures, such as the 44 losing nearly 180 fps going from a 7" to a 6" barrel, but nearly nothing going from 6" to 5". From what I read of charts the 44 Magnum shoots anything of the same weight faster and handles heavier bullets.
Bullet type should also be considered and whether one handloads.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

Nothing wrong with being a 10mm fan ...... but anyone thinking it outclasses a 44mag ..... isn't thinking ... or thinking too much (drops mike)If you start thinking like a Free Man

No one said anything about outclassing if we are talking about similar barrel lengths, we are talking about the advantages of the 10mm when weight is factored in.
