If you're making an AR pistol, you probably don't want to put semi-automatic.

If it's a fixed magazine, it's no different from a 1911 or Glock type build.

Then you would not select a "frame only" option.

How about if I buy a PPT lwrc spd pistol lower, can I just buy any upper? Or do I have to make it from scratch? Also, with a fixed mag can it be semi?

Assuming you PPT the pistol lower, my understanding is that you can build it semi from the beginning. In addition, you will need to install a fixed mag solution, to comply with CA AW restriction.

It will be PPT, I haven’t called my local ffl (RifleGear) to see if they can do this for me.

The upper though, do I have to build it from scratch or can I buy any 10.5-11.5” upper and slap it together?

Uppers are not currently regulated other than NFA laws which preclude possession of an upper with a barrel less than 16" if you do not already possess a lower that can legally be assembled into a pistol OR if you do not also possess a rifle lower.


There is no legal reason to build an upper from parts.

Was anybody succesful to fill up on-line Vol. Reg. form?
What should be chosen in drop down menu for "MAKE". There is no option for self built.
Also, "Acquired From", there is no option for Self Built.

So I read this over and over and now have a headache. LOL Just to confirm. I have a 80% that was completed in 2012. As it currently sits, its got a fixed mag(going to swap it to Juggernaut Hellfighter) and its got a custom serial number(that I thought was funny at the time) engraved. Engraving was also done in 2012. All I need to do now it vol reg it? Since its also got a fixed mag, evil features don't matter? Barrel shroud and threaded barrel is OK? Sorry for the dumb question but I want to make sure Im doing this correctly.
