I've bought two handguns from Alquist and a bunch of ammo. No complaints other than having to drive from Modesto.

So,

I was in there last week buying a pistol. I had an envelope with all of my paperwork. Also in the envelope was the receipt for the Sig 556 Pistol I bought last month from JK Supply. When I laughed and said, bet you don't see many of these (P556 receipts). They (the owner and the two other guys) all started telling me that I better be careful, that if the cops saw me with the gun, I would get arrested.

I tried to explain that it had a bullet button, and a bob sled. But, they just looked at me like I was ignorant and foolish, and said it was a "very gray area." The owner then started explaining to another customer how ridiculous bullet buttons are.

I understand that DOJ does not want bullet buttons to be legal. I am guessing that they are putting some sort of vague pressure on gun dealers. I understand that shop owners don't want to risk going against DOJ, and I would guess, that they wish other OLL friendly FFLs would stop snipping away their customers.

The thing I don't get is this. I am a customer in their shop. Why be rude to me? Since we know that DOJ reads Calguns threads, they certainly know who is selling OLLs, they certainly know who is buying guns with bullet buttons, (I think they can crack my screen name - and learn my real identity.) Yet DOJ does not arrest folks with bullet button guns. All of this is known.

So, as much as the owner, and staff, at Alquist Arms does not want bullet buttons to be legal, why be rude to me about it?

So, Alquist Arms:
Good American small business - Yes.
Lots of guns in stock to check out - Yes.
Low prices on guns - Yes.
OLL friendly - No.
Typical OLL gun store FUD - Yes.

If you want my opinion on AA, I won't shop there ever again.

I've been there 3 times, and while I mostly enjoyed the service (been good aside for the incident below), they play the "good 'ol boy" game. Every time I've been there, I have had people called to the front of the line and some people even just walk up there and get helped before the other people in line. And instead of a quick deal, they sit there and bs with the people behind the counter. I've even been in the middle of a transaction where they guy helping me just took off and helped one of his buddies while I waited for 30 minutes for the guy to come back and finish up my paperwork.

My business goes to Schell's now.

Went to Alquist today

I just got back from Alquist today, there was a lot of people in there. Paid for a Remmy 870.. They do have a lot of guns in stock. I bought my Ruger 10/22 from them, and would have bought a pistol there had they had the one I was looking for at the time. They are a very helpful crew, they mounted and bore-sighted my scope for free since I bought my 10/22 there.

Alquist Arms most always have ammo these days, even if they are raiding wal-mart (I have no idea). And their ammo is mostly decently priced too, as well as the guns. I would definately recommend them, and I chose to get my 870 there today instead of at Big 5 because we should support American small businesses like Alquist whenever we can.

My business goes to Schell's now.

I went into Schell's the other day to check it out. The customer "lobby" is no bigger than closet. That's not a joke. It's probably 40 square feet. I hope he doesn't ever get more than one customer at a time. It would be quite uncomfortable.

I asked for a price on a new Walther P22. I was handed an obviously used handgun and told $499. The same gun at Alquist was around $320 (The Alquist gun was clearly new).

At Schell's I also inquired on the price on a pistol vault/safe. The item was unboxed and covered in dust. The price asked was twice what Bilson's Sporting goods wanted for the same item (which was still new and in sealed box).

Schell's was also NOT interested in dealing with OLL. It was the same response I got from Alquist only minutes later. Right or wrong, I guess they don't need the legal costs or liability. It wasn't worth the hassle or potentional legal action to them. I doubt either business cared about the loss of this type of customer. It seamed a sacrifice they were more than willing to accept.

I've been "in" Schell's with 2 other people. That's about the max you can get in there...

Their prices on some of the things I've purchased there were higher than most places. But the customer service I've received through them (your mileage may vary) more than makes up for it (the mark-up wasn't enough to worry over for me).

I used to go to Sierra in Modesto, but steered clear when they were being hassled (or whatever was going on with them a few of years back). I hear they are still up and running (haven't been around for almost 2 years).

If I want to deal with an OLL, I know where to go. If I want to do handgun, rifle, shotgun business, I really don't care where I go, as long as the place supports the 2nd Amendment and has decent customer service.

I'll stick with Alquist or Bilson's in Turlock for gun purchases. Both have great customer service as far as I'm concerned and I haven't found a gun shop yet that is against the 2nd amendment.

I don't know what customer service a place could be providing that is worth paying a 64%/$179 markup like I described before. Just ask for the price on 9mm ammo at Schell's and see what response you get. LOL. No thanks.

Can you help me understand what you mean by this?

You seem to be implying that if a customer is interested in buying a firearm with a bullet button, or a Monster Man grip, that they would not buy any handguns that are on the roster, or ammunition, or accessories.

Why wound a gun store not be interested in a customer, just because the customer was interested in firearms specially modified to comply with California law?

Wouldn't it be better for business, to simply say, "I'm sorry, we have elected not to sell modified firearms, or stripped lowers, but we would be happy to meet your other firearm needs?"

When I think of 'types of customers' a gun dealers should avoid it is:

1. Street gang members
2. Members of the mafia
3. Terrorists

Do Californians deserve to be on this list simply because they would like to buy the same firearms that are legal to own in the rest of the country?

But, then again, maybe I misunderstand what you mean by "this type of customer"

I have generally been happy with Alquist. Just finished purchasing my third gun from them. I called them about a CZ SP01 that was on their website, they brought it in for me, I looked at it for about 5 minutes and purchased it. They then charged me less than what had been on the website, saving me about $30. Their ammo prices are ok, accessories are in line with everyone else, and I like their selection and prices on guns. I will buy from them again.

Yes! Used them for years. Went to hell when Ron Ronning took over.
Stick with Alquist!
