Glock 17 upgrades?
Collapse

You can get a glock 17 for $500 during a glock day sale. $150 (30% of the cost of a glock) is quite a lot for a trigger upgrade. Glocks are easy to work on. I got my 34 to about 2.75lb trigger pull with $26 worth of parts and 10min of polishing. Overall it took me less than 20min to break it down and upgrade my trigger.
I've met people who have owned guns for decades and can't hit a 8" plate at 10 yards.
I've been lucky enough to get a few tips from old timers who were doing IPSC/USPSA from the inception and some of those tips are invaluable.Comment

First thing you need - better sights. I'm partial to Wilson/Vickers sights.
I would do that before you train. The stock sights are a joke. "Fillers" as I call em.Comment

You my friend are without a doubt a exceedingly rare Glocksmith. It took me longer then that to get a measured 2 1/2 pull.
What scale exactly did you measure that with?
Please outline the handgun you installed them in and what manufactured parts exactly you used.
If I can get under 3 pounds without changing trigger geometry, I would love to know.
You must understand, I have toyed with these for some time. It has never been easy to get under 3 pounds without changing to a modified trigger bar...Comment

If it was easy to get shooters out and actually attend training, then I would be all about encouraging that. No matter what you may see, I know filling classes for instruction is difficult. No matter how big of a name you may or may not be.
Going out and getting trained is another element of ones path to be more confident, as is getting an improved trigger.
i know the site Bob recommended. It has haileys offering, along with Vogels and Hackathorns. Typically the shoe and trigger bar geometry is changed. I do this work on stock triggers. For lightest press you need the minus connector , heavier trigger bar spring, plunger polished and lighter spring, along with a 4 lb striker spring. Without the geometry change, you will be in the high 4 lb area, maybe hitting close to three. Which will be still better then most production 1911s triggers. No one seems to have issue with lightened 1911 triggers
. Somehow they must create less liability. Must be all the safeties.....sheesh..
There is no doubt in my mind that a lighter trigger in his Glock will see an immediate improvement with accuracy.
Sure a good instructor could give him the instruction, and if he applied it correctly he would be rewarded with accuracy possibly. It's tough running a firing line and having shooters struggle with any consistency. Trigger control is always at the forefront. The students who had better triggers certainly were able to shoot more accurately more consistently. This rings true even for guys shooting high end guns and little experience in formal classes.
Hope, my girlfriend and her 17 year old son could not shoot as accurately as they do if it were not for shooting my modified handguns. They both have great trigger control as it seems. Must be genes... Anyways, they would not be getting so much confidence and having fun if I put stock unmodified handguns in their paws. Yeah, they get a live in instructor. This obviously helps them. But my focus for them is just fundamentals. No tactical nothing. Solid drills from 2 yards to 25 yards. We use steel mostly to keep it fun..... I'm off track a little here....
Taking a fundamental class first would always be my recommendation to a new shooter. Hopefully if the instructor is good, he will make students aware of mods and other equipment they might consider. If you listen and if he can break down the importance of structuring your own training sessions, you may get an excellent value and possibly one better then buying the trigger.
Sometimes going through the motions of attending training can be a sizable obstacle. I have trained on both coasts. But I started locally before I really got out and went after it. I am comfortable attending someone's class. Maybe not all firearm owners are.
Nothing wrong with wanting to throw money at your blaster.
Get the barrel cerakoated gold if you want that look. It may be cheaper.
Sights do have to go on that gun. Mainly due to them being too blocky and they obscure too much. Thin front and being a fiber optic is the heat. You will see more through the sights for more consistency in holding them at the same point of aim. Night sights overrated big time. They tend to be big and blocky. When was the last time you shot someone in the dark? Right, get something more practical that will help you shoot more accurately on the range. After all, like many, that will be the only place you will actually shoot the handgun anyways...Last edited by Matt P; 05-21-2015, 11:40 AM.Comment

Couldn't agree more!Originally posted by HopetonBrownSerious question. If you have never had training, how do you know the trigger and mag release are problematic? Nobody who really knows what they're doing has shown you how to manipulate them.
1,000 rounds plinking by yourself with no training just means you spent $250 doing it wrong.
I probably shot 3000 rnds before I took my first training class. Likely 2000 of those only served to practice bad habits .. another 500 I have no freaking idea where the shots went.
I undoubtedly improved more during my first 2 day training class than I did during my previous 3 months 'teaching' myself.Comment

It's not me, it was luck with parts. I have a 22 and 34, I did the same polishing (all by hand with Flintz) and parts and the 34 ended up with about 2.75lb trigger pull and the 22 ended up with a 3lb trigger pull. Both were with Zev competition spring kit and Zev v4 2lb race connector. It had to be tolerances in the parts.
I ended up going with a Taran connector with the Zev springs which gave about a 3.3lb trigger pull but it's much crisper. There's always that trade off of light pull and mushy vs crisper but harder pull. I used a Lyman digital.Comment

Aside from new, better sights, and the .25 trigger job, you could add the extended beavertail.
Sorry, not sorry.

Hopetonbrown, What I was actually doing was answering the OP's questions instead of telling him he's an idiot and telling him he is doing everything wrong. Maybe he was but I doubt that either one of us knows that for sure. Maybe he was doing drills he got from an experienced shooter or instructor. You just assumed he is not as smart as you and you needed to do your civic duty and sit him straight. That's pretty arrogant of you, not to mention rude, so I thought I would say something.
As far as the parts I recommended, they are all good parts, reasonably priced for what you get and I have used them for years on probably 60-70 Glocks.
My opinion on modifying firearms to be used for self defense is if you are spending money to increase your physical skills, why shouldn't also spend a little money to improve the shootability of your weapons selection. Your personal training AND your weapons modification should be done within reason but both are easily defendable in court. On the other hand a 1 pound trigger, just like military assault training for a civilian would be much harder to explain if you ever had to use your weapon.
By the way thank for promoting me to both 'beloved' and 'national treasure', I was under the impression only my kids thought of me that way. If your opinion actually mattered I would be feeling very warm and fuzzy for the rest of the week.Comment

forerl, getting any Glock trigger pull under 3 lbs for $26 and 10 minutes is pretty cool, definitely beyond my ability and I have worked on more then a couple of Glock's.Comment

Again Forel, awesome job... Zevs fulcrum kit at $250 gets you as low as 3 pounds.
You bested that for $26.00.
And twice!
Plus you wasted no dollas on that lighter and longer striker.
Amazing if it is also reliable without light strikes.
I use the Lyman and the RCBS scale to test.
Taran sells this kit for $44.99..
TTI Grand Master 3.25lb Connector Kit
Any great shooter who knows their way around a Glock will tell you that the key to having the optimal set-up is a great connector kit and extra springs. When we sent out our new TTI Grand Master 3.25lb Connector Kit to some of the world's top shooters, and we received a unanimous " Holy !@#$, dude! ".
Glock's advertised 5.5lb trigger pull actually measures out at 7-7.75lbs on average. The Grand Master 3.25lb Connector Kit brings down the trigger pull to 3-4lb with no gunsmithing!
This trigger package will provide the lightest, smoothest, and cleanest trigger break you'll ever put into your Glock. Made from extremely hard SAE 1075 Heat-Treated Tool-Steel, highly polished, and the only connector that is electroless nickel plated ( MIL-C-26074E Military Standard ). This process achieves a light, clean smooth break with specially designed chrome silicone springs to remove some of the take-up and add a faster reset while reducing brittleness. Top shooters from around the world attest to the superiority and competitive excellence brought by the Grand Master connector kit. Shooters such as; Bob Vogel ( World and National Champion ), Nils Jonasson( National Champion ), Shane Coley ( National Champion ), Blake Miguez ( National and World Champion ), Shannon Smith ( National Champion ), Manny Bragg, Dustin Ellerman ( Top Shot Winner ), Randi Rogers( National and World Champion ), Kieth Garcia( 3 Gun Nation Champion), Gabby Franco ( Top Shot ), and Allie Barrett ( World Rim-Fire Champion ).
Kit includes:
1x TTI GM Electroless Connector
2x TTI Reduced power Striker Springs
2x TTI Trigger-return Springs
1x TTI Reduced Power-Plunger Spring
1x TTI Stainless Steel Rear Trigger Pin ( I assume this pin as there may be flex with the plastic one?)
