They are supposed to answer in 90 days. My app has been sitting unanswered for yearly 7 years now. Not nearly as long as yours. How much you want to bet all this time they took it and shredded every non-VIP application!

I will be shocked if they kept the paperwork, that's a lot of $$$ and evidence.

Sounds to me that she should take a leave of absence while this is sorted out- be it her call or the County's.

Note to Admins- might make sense to break off these "Adventures of Laurie" to its own thread at this point, rather than CCW. We could leave a reference to it here in the CCW thread? This is going to grow legs as it proceeds, no doubt. Your call of course.

I was hoping the article would end with Laurie doing time in prison. The wheel of justice sure turns very slowly in this case.

‘Unprecedented:' Santa Clara County DA Sounds Off on Grand Jury Corruption Accusations Against Sheriff
Although Sheriff Laurie Smith hasn't been charged criminally in the pay-to-play concealed gun permit scandal, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said his office's criminal investigation helped pave the way for the Civil Grand Jury's corruption accusations.

I can't figure out why the County Executive Officer hasn't put her on leave, maybe since Sheriffs are elected that's not doable (I think it should be). Professionally, one or the other of them should have her spend some days on the beach while this is sorted. Paid/not, I don't care- she needs to sit down.

The only hopes for Santa Clara Co are: (1) criminal indictment motivating Smith to resign. (2) Smith losing re-election June 07. (3) A solid, pro Carry win in NYSRPA (before Independence Day). (4) A conviction and removal of Smith from office for civil and/or criminal wrongdoing.

So, unless Smith decides to liberalize acceptable GC before June there’s really not much to do besides supporting, volunteering and donating to the best challenger.

Months ago I wrote Jensen's campaign, just got this tonight:

Thank you for your interest in Kevin Jensen for Sheriff 2022 campaign and your question regarding ccw’s.

It has been widely reported that the incumbent won't define her concealed carry weapons policy amidst allegations and data that strongly suggest that the small number of quid pro quo permits granted were linked to contributions and favorable influence.

Kevin has made the commitment to a legal, responsible and fair process with regard to CCWs. Here is Kevin's response:

"I recognize how important this topic is to the residents of Santa Clara County. Unlike the current situation, the policy I plan to implement will be a legal, fair, transparent and consistent process. I have researched the policies and spoken with Sheriffs and staff of other jurisdictions and will be implementing the best of what is working across the State of California. This means an applicant must first meet all of the requirements set out by law. Each application will be evaluated using a fair and transparent process with the applicant being informed of approval or denial within the timeframe required by state law. Independent oversight will be put in place, and neither political influence nor campaign donations will improve one's chances of securing a CCW permit.”

Kevin’s plans include a comprehensive county-wide crime prevention program, focusing on proactive community policing model, education (includIng: internet crime, identity theft, school safety, bullying, gang prevention), and a home safety component with a strong emphasis on firearm safety to include education on the laws, best practices and critical importance of the safe storage of firearms.

                      Thank you,

                      Kevin Jensen for Sheriff 2022

That response was essentially, "We won't do anything illegal".
What we really want to know is if you see CCW permits as a right for all non felon citizens, or is it a privilege only for wealthy business owners?

                          Agree regarding your first paragraph.

Regarding second paragraph: current state of federal law is the CA9 en banc decision in Peruta saying no 2A right to a CCW. While we hope SCOTUS will change that, it hasn’t yet. So better approach is to ask “Will you issue CCW permits like Sonoma, Solano, Sacramento, Orange and San Diego counties where people who use ATMs, fill up their cars or use convenience stores at night can carry to protect themselves?”

Or, simpler, “Will you issue permits for more reasons than just death threats and work related risks?” If he says no, then ask why not when so many counties, such as Sonoma, Solano, Sacramento, Orange and San Diego do without any problems?

Or more bluntly: “Why should we vote for you if you won’t let us protect ourselves and our families while in public?” Ask Smith that too. She’s a proven anti, so the default move is voting against her.

LA Sheriff Villanueva regularly does virtual town halls on FB/Instagram. Does anyone know if Smith does them? If so it would be a good chance to ask her

My inquiry 2 months ago that generated this reply, did so. I had several questions about the candidate's position- all were ignored and the prepared PR soundbite came instead.
