Got my renewal approved today. 5 days after submitting my missing paperwork (class and live fire certifications). Not as fast as yours (1 day), but still fast!
Even better, the renewal doesn’t start until pickup, and pickup can be scheduled for a days that is months in the future.
Per the SCC renewal approval email:
“When scheduling your pick up appointment, you may want to consider selecting a date that is close to, but not after the expiration date of your current CCW permit. Doing this will allow you to maximize the usage time of the current CCW permit, as the date you pick up your new permit will trigger the two years start date.”
Kudos to the SCC CCW staff for a fast, efficient and fair renewal process.

My scheduling experience is a poor predictor.
I should've checked the re-cert class schedule - I missed the next available class by a day, so I was delayed a month till the next two-session series began.
I submitted my re-cert class forms on the 1st, rcvd email alert for missing docs 3 weeks later on the 25th, corrected the re-cert class form a week later on the 2nd, and rcvd renewal approval notification the next day on the 3rd.
I.e. Probably less than a month after submission of my recert class sign-off if I hadn't messed up the paperwork.
The pickup appt calendar was solidly booked, so I didn't pick up till 8 days after notification, which meant I had a 3-day period of no-carry due to expired permit.Leave a comment:

I tried to game the system & beat the 2025 fee increase by submitting & paying in 2024 - far ahead of the 90 day expiration - but scso cancelled both the application and cc charge.
I re-submitted at 90 days prior to expiration and scheduled my requal only after scso/Permitium acknowledged my application.
My preferred vendor was fully booked for six weeks, but they assured me that was plenty of time, and they were correct (but for the aberrational paperwork confusion).
I.e. don't procrastinate scheduling your requal, but if there's a 'no-refuinds' policy, prudence dictates booking it after the Permitium acknowledgement.Leave a comment:

Hi folks, another update.
Application submitted: 12/17/24, initial interview date: 12/9/25
(was able to reschedule the interview sooner, I checked every other day)
Initial interview: 4/8/25, was told that the expected wait would be about 30 days
Follow-up email sent to office: 6/10/25, received response same-day saying I should receive an email soon
Psych Testing Email: 6/11/25
Psych Test Pt. 1 (written test): 7/2/25
Psych Test Pt. 2 (interview): 7/14/25
Livescan Go-ahead Email: 7/22/25
Livescan Appointment: 7/24/25, FBI / DOJ cleared 7/24, Firearms cleared 7/26
Training Email: 7/29/25, scheduled for 8/30 with Saber Tactics
The total time from when I received the Livescan request from SCCSO to the training email was 7 days flat.
The actual Livescan itself cleared in three days.
Maybe I got lucky, but hopefully this is a signal that they are getting pretty fast with processing!

They were very prompt. The problem was on my side. My re-certification vendor inadvertently sent me a partial requal form (looked completed, but was missing the last page), so it took some back and forth between me and scso and then with the vendor to get it all straightened out.
Absent that, my renewal would have been well ahead of expiration. As it was, I picked up the new permit three days after my previous one expired.
Just get going on the requal as soon as possible once you’re 90 days out, and you should be in good shape.Leave a comment:

One thing that seems to have changed in the process is that all references have to be contacted-
I have read from a few folks that of their 3 references, the department was only able to make contact with 2 of them, but proceeded anyways.
I think one of my references has not been picking up the phone / getting voicemails, and today I got an email asking to give them a new reference instead, because they have to contact all three and talk to them in order to proceed with the application. Perhaps this is related to SB2?

Hi folks,
Hasn't been much movement on this thread recently, so folks who have applied recently may be wondering what the timeline is like as of now.
Application submitted: 12/17/24, initial interview date: 12/9/25
(was able to reschedule the interview sooner, I checked every other day)
Initial interview: 4/8/25, was told that the expected wait would be about 30 days

Psych Test Pt. 2 (interview): 7/14/25
Livescan Go-ahead Email: 7/22/25
The only big delay so far has been the wait for the initial Psych email. I was told it would take about 30 days. I waited 2 months before sending an email asking for an update, and later that day I received a response saying that I should receive the testing email soon, and I did the next day.

Just to make sure people have seen this article about SoBay IA CCW fees: https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2024/09...unicipalities/
paragraph 5 has the feesLeave a comment:

CRPA is considering litigation against Santa Clara County for its extraordinarily high CCW permit fees of nearly $1,000, which brings the total expense to applicants to around $2,000 when the other expenses (psych exam, livescan, training course) are factored in.
If we do pursue this lawsuit, we will need two types of plaintiffs (mostly No. 1, but some of No. 2 as well):
1. Residents of Santa Clara County who would apply for a CCW permit with the Sheriff's Department, but have not done so because they cannot afford the massive expense of doing so.
2. Residents of Santa Clara County who have a CCW permit due to be renewed in 2025, who will now have to pay $477 plus the cost of a training course to renew their permit. If you can demonstrate financial difficulty due to this expense, that would be ideal.
For those without a permit yet, please make sure you have a spotless personal record and would be a shoo-in to get the permit, but for the expense. We don't want the case getting hung up on arguments of "he would have been denied anyway" and such.

Has anyone who recently did the psych test and interview hear back from them? Did my test 12-16 and interview with the psychiatrist 12-17 and it’s been crickets since.Leave a comment:
