Applied in April, fingerprints in May did not hear anything at all until December they needed me to resubmit proof of address due to expiration date. After updated paperwork was submitted they reached out in a few weeks I was given a phone interview. I was told I was going to be submitted to sheriff and would hear back in a couple weeks and at this time I enrolled in my San Joaquin approved classes from the list of classes on sheriffs site. I submitted my class certifications to sheriff site and scheduled the soonest pickup date available which is a month out.
During phone interview I was told they are backlogged and are getting through the list.

applied April last year, got phone call in December for interview and had to resubmit more current documentation since it had been 6 months and I guess they wanted to make sure my residence was still the same.

I happen to have filed divorce in the time between applying and then getting my phone interview, so the investigator recommended I take a psych eval to ensure I was of proper state of mind to move forward. Did the eval ($175 out of pocket, thanks) Passed it and got my confirmation to go ahead and take my class.

I got lucky and had a pickup date avail 2 days after my class, so that was nice.

I used One on One Firearms in sac for CCW class, highly recommend, I'll also be doing their Utah+ ccw class soon just to be able to go into Nevada etc and whatnot without the worry of breaking any law.

Hey just wanted to share what the process was like for me with everyone. It was fairly simple and straight forward other than the amount of time it took from the day I applied to my pickup day. So on 8/3/21I applied for my ccw through Permitium.I cant exactly remember when my livescan was but after that I received no communication from the Sheriffs Office until 3/23/22 when i got an email and phone call for additional info. They informed me that my drivers license was suspended due to not going to court for a ticket and in order to move forward I had to clear up the ticket and have my DL reissued. I was given 2 weeks to take care of everything and was informed that once done i needed to submit proof of payment of my fine,my license and an updated proof of residence, On 03/28/22 I took care of the court issue and had my DL reinstated and submitted all info through email. On 04/01/22 I did my phone interview. On 04/08/22 I was approved and submitted my final payment and had actually already taken my class through NFI with Chuck Fields at the Linden Gun range on 02/05/22 and 02/06/22 which I dont recommend doing that prior to getting approved but i didnt understand the process at the time. I then scheduled my pickup for 5/17/22 but a few days later was able to get rescheuled for 04/21/22 which was the soonest available. Went down on the 21st filled out a few papers made sure everything was correct and was issued m ccw. Hope the things I went through could help a few people out. Make sure you dont have any outstanding tickets or anything and also during the phone interview be ready for them to know everything about you. i was the victim of a stabbing year before this and they asked me why i didnt put that info on the initial application. When it asks have you ever had ANY interaction with the police they mean as the suspect or the victim.

          Hello All.

          * * * This is an UPDATE as of 04/07/2023 * * *

          San Joaquin County Sheriff CCW.

          Application Online: 03/20/2022 - SUBMITTED
          Application Fees: 03/20/2022 - COMPLETED/PAID
          LiveScan Appointment: 06/08/2022 - COMPLETED
          LiveScan Results: 12/05/2022 - RECEIVED
          Phone Interview: 12/07/2022 - COMPLETED
          Follow-Up Interview Questions: 12/14/2022 - COMPLETED
          Follow-Up Interview Questions: 12/21/2022 - COMPLETED
          APPROVAL E-mail Received: 12/27/2022 - RECEIVED
Final Fees Due: 12/28/2022 - PAID
Firearms Training: 03/22/2023 - COMPLETED - Ripon (Rosengarten Firearms Training)
Appointment for CCW Pick-Up - 03/28/2023 - PICKED UP!!! (Expires 2 Years from Issue Date not Approval Date)

Everything would have been issued sooner, had I completed the Firearms Training Certification immediately after receiving the approval notification. I had some financial issues, so taking the Certification Course took a few months.

          * * * You Only Have 90 DAYS to complete the Firearms Training Certification after APPROVAL * * *

I was a little disappointed by the Permit that the Sheriffs Dept. Issues. A crooked cut paper, poorly laminated 2 sided card with a small micro photo (yours) on the back.
I guess it doesn't really matter. I now Have It.

I have also chose to do the USCCA Insurance. For the beginning, I'm paying for the ELITE Membership, plus I get a Veteran 10% Discount which helps.. I may downgrade later.

It feels good to finally have this all completed.

I have also applied for the UTAH CCW. I sent out my APPLICATION packet and check on 04/06/2023. They should receive it by Saturday/Monday. I'll update again when I hear back from UTAH. They Estimate Up To 60 Days.

          I hope this information helps.

Anyone know how long the renewal approvals are taking to get the green light to move forward?

After your livescan appointment -- how long have y'all had to wait to get a call that you can move forward to the next step?

7 months from completion and still waiting. Called and they said 6-8 months after they RECIEVE livescan results.

                  Hard Cards

Hey guys - I haven't seen this mentioned yet so I'd share for anyone interested. I went to pickup my CCW modification and I was issued the hard plastic credit card type card that a lot of the other counties are issuing.

I was issued both the hard plastic and laminated paper card. The deputy told me to carry both but he suspects we'll only need to carry the hard card once the DOJ approves them.

Modification was quick too: applied on 6/2, approved on 6/9 and pickup on 6/13.

Now that the County is issuing the Credit Card type permits can existing CCW holders exchange our laminated cards for them, or have them both?

They are still waiting on doj approval. There is no point to getting this until it is approved.

                          My experience

Applied 7/27/2022 ( make you live scan appt during the application process)

                          Live scan 10/12/2022 ? 77 days
                          CA Completed - 10/12/2022
                          FBI Completed - 10/12/2022
Firearms Completed - 10/14/2022 (this means nothing, it will still take awhile to process your background)

Phone Interview 5/11/2023 ? 211 days (be honest on your application and this will just be a review and update)

                          Approval 6/01/2023 ? 21 days
                          Scheduled pick-up for 07/06/2023 (updated to 06/22/2023)

                          CCW Class 06/17/2023 16 days

                          Uploaded Class Certificate 06/17/2023

                          Picked up 06/22/2023 5 days

                          Original p/u was 7/6/2023

                          Notes:

Schedule your appointment as soon as approved, if you are not able to get your class done you can move it.

There are many ccw class vendors available with varying options to fit your schedule. I chose to fit a busy schedule and found a quality vendor.

If you are waiting on an appointment and want to try for an earlier date, check everyday, I was able to move my pick up forward by 2 weeks.

There were three people in my initial CCW class, two of us were approaching 1 year since initial app. One was about 7 months since initial app.

While I was in for my pick-up there were at least 6 other people that came in either before or after me to pick up. So they are issuing!

                          Good Luck!

Congratulations on getting your permit. If you liked your CCW class/instructor (and especially if you didn't) I encourage you to share a review of your class. That helps others decide what class they may want to take themselves.

This is my opinion: Choosing my CCW class was not a major decision as I have been preparing for the past year.

My requirements at the time were to get a class that fit my schedule, work vacation, life etc. and to get a smaller class size. The Company I found to do that was Defensive Accuracy with Larry Behnke in Lodi (daccw.com). I recommend them.

I have also taken a class with GunKraft and recommend them as well, although there was nothing I could fit into my schedule for CCW training.

I will be a return customer for both companies.

I will also seek out other opportunities to train and improve skills.

                              My real recommendation is to:

                              1) take a private or semi private lesson that solidifies your shooting fundamentals as soon as possible before your CCW class. While it is covered in most CCW classes from my research, you are better off getting that squared away.

                              2) Create a training budget for as long as you plan to be licensed and carry. and train.

                              3) Take it seriously. Understand the legal, moral and other aspects of deciding to carry; many decisions are made the minute you put that firearm on and leave your house.
