Hey all - just submitted my intitial application. I'm concerned I messed something up...didn't see anywhere on the application where I was asked to provide "good cause" for requesting the CCW permit. Is it not on the initial application?

      FYI Livescan appt 12/2/2022

DOJ updated the LTC standard application and due to the recent landmark SCOTUS decision (NYSRPA v. Bruen), AG Bonta sent out a letter to LE agencies stating that "good cause" is unconstitutional; however, the subjective "good moral character" can still be applied since the Court did not mention that .

Just did my Initial LTC application in Ripon. I had an older paper package that I picked up in July, did all the training and Police Chiefs prerequisites, then turned in on September 12th. Lo and behold, the coordinator told me they had updated the application which didn't require a good cause any more!

BTW, RPD is quick! Got livescanned the same day (lucky that the coordinator had an open appointment), DOJ background check back, and got the permission slip, in hand, in a week.

Good to know. One of the factors that encouraged me to move out of the bay area. There is still hope for California!

Other than a couple moving violations including a DUI that happened over 9 years ago, I have no violent or criminal history. So hopefully I should be fine.

They might ask you about the DUI. The best thing you can do is be completely honest about it.

Yeah, that's what I assume and I have no issue doing so. I did get that expunged recently. I still mentioned it on the application. Will let you know how it goes.

I have a friend in San Joaquin country about to start her CCW process.
Should she wait until she's taken the class to put in her application/live scan... or is it like other counties where it can be done in parallel? (and of course, not finally approved until done).

Also, for this county, is there a shooting qualification needed for the CCW class? She's shopping for a pistol now, and it'll take a few weeks until she finds the right one and goes through the 10 day wait.

                      TIA!

I am an approved vendor/instructor for San Joaquin. Apply and do not get approved training until told to do so by SJSO.

I’ve always taken the training after submitting the application, but prior to approval. I did this with my initial application after moving to San Joaquin County (I had to go almost a year without a CCW license as the one from my previous county was no longer valid after moving), and even though the training certification was 4 months old when I finally got approved, they said it was fine. And I have done it for every renewal since then. I do it this way so that when I get the approval phone call I don’t have to wait to book and attend a training class; I can pick up my renewal right away. Just know that if you don’t get approved, you’re out the money for the training and certification.

In regard to your second question, San Joaquin County doesn’t specify what the particular shooting qualification must entail (besides some basic minimums, from what I understand), but each of the training providers will have their own shooting requirements in order to pass their course. From what I’ve heard, they’re all pretty easy to pass if you’ve mastered some basic skills, but some are kind of ridiculous. I know someone who went to a provider that required firing while kneeling on the ground, as well as some other tacticool techniques that seemed unnecessary to carry a gun for self-defense purposes. I’ve done CCW certifications with Vince Bizzini at Valley Defense and Duncan Ramirez at First Response. Both are excellent, and provide very worthwhile training in addition to no-nonsense certification.

I just applied and paid fees. My appointment is in December. Which city are you located?

                            Thanks,

We teach the San Joaquin CCW class at Elite Armory Plus in Tracy.

That is incorrect. See the link in my previous post--that outlines the course of fire, target and passing score each applicant must shoot with the pistol(s) they intend to carry concealed per SJSO.

each of the training providers will have their own shooting requirements in order to pass their course. Each instructor may have shooting requirements in addition to the ones mentioned above. But they may not.

Yeah, that’s the “besides some basic minimums” part that you deleted from what I posted above.
