You're going t have to qualify with the weapon you want to add on your permit. When you get your certificate for the training and qualification, you will need to call PSD to setup and appointment to go in and modify your permit. Charge for the change/update is $10.

I believe this is correct you have to go to a recommended training facility and qualify with the new weapon . Once you qualify the training facility will print you a certificate and with that you take it to your sheriff's dept. To change or update a weapon after your CCW has been issued it is a 10 dollar charge

So I picked up my permit today; was really surprised/happy to see multiple people waiting to pick up their permits and a couple people came in to start their renewal process. One guy was there to do a modification but I didn't get to talk to him...

The lady who was doing the permits was running all over the place trying to get paperwork done. Kind of felt sorry for her. Took about 30 minutes or so to get my permit.

There was a guy there who didn't get his permit though. Kind of sucked and it seemed he was approved but was turned away because his training cert was to old (circa 2014). Honestly I would've called to make sure it would still be accepted/valid so you didn't have to waste time going there. Heck I called to make sure the training/cert I did in January of this year would still be valid.

Well if anyone of the people who picked up their permits are CalGunners, Congrats!!!

One of the guys I was talking to was actually approved sometime in January but he couldn't find a class to get training until now.

Imagine how he felt not be able to pick up his permit for 2-3 months??

Modification Process

Has anyone here changed the guns listed on their permit prior to renewal? If so, what was involved in the process and how did it go?

Here's the actual process:
1) Qualify for the weapon/s you want to add to your permit via one of the approved vendors. You will need to show proof of your CCW and pay their fee. No class involved.

2) Get issued a certificate from the CCW instructor of your proficiency.

3) Head to SJ Sheriff's PSD during business hours to fill out the modification application form and pay the fee of $10. M-F 8am to 5pm.

4) Pick up the new CCW Permit after getting a call that it's ready in about 2 weeks.

Thank you. I ended up calling the Sheriff's PSD, and this is exactly what they told me. When I asked specifically about training, she said, "You only need to do the shooting part, and then bring in the certificate showing that you qualified with the guns you want to add."

I still don't know, or haven't heard from, anyone who has done this, but this is good enough for me. I ordered a no-lock S&W 642 to replace my SIG P238, so I'll have .45, .40, and .38 spl +P on my permit. When it comes in, I'll go through this substitution process and let people know how it went (if anyone's interested). Thanks again, geebot.

Sheriff's PSD does go by the list of handguns on the CCW Training Certificate and not what was initially listed on the application.

I've had a couple of colleagues that have had a few different instances:

One only had 1 weapon on the application and was reminded by the BI on the initial interview that they area allowed up to 3.

Another had changed 2 of the handguns by the time he took the CCW Training and those were the ones listed on the Permit.

Has anyone asked why we are limited to 3 firearms I know some IA alow more than that . Just thought it would free up time at the sheriff office not having to spend time adding and subtracting firearms from permit. Is it something to bring to the sheriff's attention ?

This actually came up as a topic on one of our conversations during the CCW class but nothing was written or at least I couldn't find anything yet.

The theory is for liability purposes. When you apply for San Joaquin CCW, you are required to sign a form indemnifying the Sheriff's Office from acts arising from the use of the weapon while carrying with the permit. We are required to take a course so that we know the basics of what is required of us and the scope of the legality with regards to CCW Permit. We also must qualify with the weapon to make sure that we are accurate to a certain degree with the weapons. There could be a chance for litigation against the IA should there be someone or something that could possibly be injured, killed, or damaged while discharging the weapon while carrying with a permit if the IA couldn't prove that the permit holder went through the rigorous process of checks and trainings.

Here's where our discussion ended up. It was theorized that limiting the number of weapons could at least provide some degree of satisfaction that the permit holder can and will remain proficient with their weapon having just listed 3 that they need to keep up with. Should there be an incident in the future, the IA can defer the burden of proving proficiency back to the permit holder since they only required for them to keep up with those 3 weapons.
