Thanks. That's a good point. I've had probably a dozen or so live-scans since Istarted coaching my kid's sports teams, being scouting troop, etc... Never even had an eyebrow raised. Of course, asking permission to carry a concealed deadly weapon vs. volunteering to coach kids or be an Asst. Scoutmaster/Scoutmaster is a tad different.

True we set the bar higher for our scouting leaders.

Go for it. I'm guessing you'll do fine. After all they passed me.

Had interview today. Went well. Took about an hour to fill out the additional paperwork and get live scan. Det Logan was the person helping me. Very stern gal. Wanted to get straight to the point. Was no mean but was not nice either. She was however very professional so i cant complain. Said process takes about 90 days and they'll call me if i passed backgrounds to schedule my range day. BTW I took my guns in and she did not say anything. She took them to the back and ran them.

Had my range day on 10/04. Picked up my license yesterday. Consider myself lucky to be living in San Bernardino county. There's always room for improvement but, overall the process was pretty darn painless.

What was the course of fire, 10 rounds at 3-5 yards? Did you need holsters? Have my range day coming up in December so I want to be prepared.

I did mine at the sheriff's training center in Devore and it was 3 yds. Others have said it's 5 yds at Apple Valley. Either way, a 2 year old monkey could do it. Pretty much all they ask for is that you get on paper with. I'm not exaggerating when I say you could do it with your eyes closed.

And it's ten rounds with a mag change somewhere along the way, for each gun you're qualifying with. It's you're choice of when to do the mag change. Most of the people around me including myself loaded 9 rounds in first mag and 1 rounds in second mag. No holster.

Most important advice I can give is to check the location out beforehand on Google earth if you're going to Devore.

Just a reminder, after Friday 10/31 all weapons checks will be conducted at the range. No more weapons checks at the station (unless policy gets changed again.)

                  Range day 10/24

Was anyone in Devore on 10/24 for their range day? I completed my day there and passed with my firearm, now I'm just waiting on the permit to be issued. Instructors said it usually takes around 10-15 business days.

For all who are wondering, to qualify with each handgun on your permit: You shoot 10 rounds (a mag change somewhere in the 10) from 3 yards at a full size target. You weapon will also be "safety checked" before you get on the live fire range. The class says 8-5 but our class got out around 2pm.

Best of luck to everyone who is currently going through the process. You are right, it does take time, but in the end it's completely worth all the hurry up and wait.

                  Keep your head up.

                  -David

Things are looking good. Det Logan gave me ring to let me know my DD214 didn't show my Honorable Discharge. I asked if I could fax one with the correct info and was given the go ahead. I then asked how everything looked and she said "great... Everything is in and you should be getting a call in a week"

Not bad considering my interview was on Sept 16

I'm starting to wonder if I should contact them or just wait. My interview was August 18th and I haven't heard a peep. I also had the wrong DD214 in my package and brought the right copy down a few days later. She wasn't in then but the woman up front said she'd be sure to put it in her box. Maybe I can call under the premise of asking if she ever got the right DD214?

So today I called the office. I was really cautious because I didn't want to seem overzealous or anything. I just asked a general question of about how long the approval process should take and that I interviewed in August. She was very nice and very helpful and said it could take up to 90 days. She asked me my name so she could pull up my file. It turns out that they sent out employment verification back in August but to an address on the base I work, but not to a particular person (I work at a military base). It never got to anyone in my chain of supervision. I gave her a name of who to send it to, and she'll send it out again today. She said that's all that we're waiting for. Now I'm glad I called.

                            Training in Devore

I didn't hear anyone say that there were any restrictions on where to park, so theoretically you could park in the other areas besides the one that I marked, but I always think its more courteous to leave the closer spaces open for others. Plus by the time I got there at least, on my day, they were all full anyway. Don't expect to find any little helpful signs or direction arrows that will help you figure out where to park and where the classroom is either. Hence my reason for the picture.

Also if you come in from the east side of the training center, off of the 215 fwy, its fairly obvious where to go and you just follow Institution Rd to the end. If you happen to enter from the west though, off of the 15 fwy, as I did, its not at all obvious. In fact you end up traveling down some random dirt roads behind the housing development to get there.

Leave your guns and ammo in the vehicle but bring your money order in with you because they will collect it at the beginning of class. You may also want to bring your own writing utensil.

                              Thanks Dirte...!

This is exactly what I needed and I'm sure others will too....!

                              -----------

stvo760... I work on Edwards AFB and they sent it to my squadron personnel office. She did her own little background check on me as she's the security manager for our squadron before sending it back out.

Not sure my background matters, but I carry a secret clearance (15yrs+) and have had livescan done for my California EMT...

                              My time line:

                              - May 1, called to schedule interview
                              - Sept 16, interview and livescan completed
                              - Sept 22, residence check
                              - Oct 29, called for a descripencie on DD214
                              - Oct 30, called to schedule range time for Dec 13
