Finally just got the call for my range date, December 16th.

Word to the wise bring a coat. We are headed to cooler weather and it is cooler in North SB/Glen Helen then it is in the City.

Got my renewal yesterday, scheduled class for February today. I'm not clear on whether to bring my renewal app down before class, or bring it to the class, the letter wasn't too clear IMO. Any advice?

It's recommended that the application is complete before you attend the class.
However, it is not needed and they do not accept it at the renewal class.

The only thing you need is your CA DL and your renewal class payment ($25.00 money order).

After you complete the renewal class, you can go to the Sheriff HQ and submit your renewal application with payment ($52.00 + $38.00 money orders).
No appointment is needed (walk in and drop off).
At this time, you can inquiry about (modifications) add/drop handguns to your permit and they will provide you with eligible dates to go to the Sheriff range to do this.
Modification range date is no cost and just requires you to bring the handguns you want added and ammo.

I'm not, now. Every renewal I learn that the process has changed or new rules have been added... But since my date is still 5 months out I hadn't checked up yet, and with the talk of people now getting their letters for the next year, I was wondering why I didn't get mine. No biggie.

My letter showed up today.

Glad I called in August, because there are only two class dates before my expiration, and I imagine Dec 12 at Rancho is already booked up.

Turn it in before. They will not process applications at the class.

To add... they do not process renewals on class DAYS.

That may not be the case if your class is in Rancho, but go ahead and walk into HQ 90 days prior to your expiration and they'll set you up no pain.

Do spend a little time to flesh out your good cause statement to a short paragraph if you originally used simply "Personal protection". Mine was not questioned at all, but I overheard a couple of other guys at the counter being "gently prodded" for more.

What days of the week for classes and range?

Initial application, range and class are Saturdays (I think twice a month).
Range for modifications is on the first Tuesday and Saturday of the month.
No appointment needed for the renewal app, just don't go in on a class day. No appointment needed for range for modification, when you turn in your renewal paperwork, they will give you a range card and schedule if you indicate you are doing a modification. Pick whichever date works best for you.

Renewal class at HQ (afternoon, 1:00) and Rancho (evening, 5:30) is Tuesday, either 1st or 2nd Tuesday of the month.
Hesperia is Thursday, Yucky Valley is Wednesday.
I'd call if you're scheduled for January.... the schedule says "Thursday" January 9th... January 9th is Tuesday.

Hesperia and YV do not have class every month.

I called in August to schedule class. I walked in on day-87 with my renewal paperwork. No appointment needed for that, BUT check the class schedule because they don't process renewals on class days (.38special posted the schedule for the remaining classes in 2017 a few pages back)

Range date is set for 4/10/18 evening class.
