Make sure you go to the big building BELOW the range office, they hold the course in classroom C. I was told that I was to meet at the range office so I waiting there today for about 30min before I started to worry as no one else was showing up. Long story short after walking all over this place I found the classroom in a different building that I was told to go to but arrived at 9:05am and apparently it was "almost 10 o'clock" and that I had missed too much (course starts at 9:00am) according to the detective and he wouldn't allow me into the room so have to reschedule. Was a "great day" today to say the least....

Well that sucks. There was someone there directing people where to go when I had my training.

I wonder why they started at 9:00? When I had my training two weeks ago it started at 8:00.

              Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

That is odd, maybe they also gave me the wrong time?? That would explain why he mentioned that they I had missed too much. No idea just slightly frustrating. Planning on giving the number at the top of the map they gave me during the interview on Monday am to try to get an appointment asap.

Check in started at 0745, by time everyone was checked in, actual instruction started around 0820.

i thought it was odd they didn't check ID's when checking in. I know, I know, who in their right mind would risk or have someone qualify for them. Since this process is so controlled, it just seemed odd.

There were a couple of husband and wife duos on the day of my training.

One wife was turning in their MO's and was going to sign the sign in sheet for her husband. The deputy said well maybe I should walk this over to your husband for him to sign so you don't commit perjury right in front of me.

I didn't notice if there was any righting on the top of the page but I bet by you signing the paper you were signing under penalty of perjury.

                            Finished!

                            My timeline:

                            Applied 2/4/2016

                            Interview: 10/26/2016 (was first available)

Residence check: no idea. (A couple of home invasion burglaries in my neighborhood since my application though, including the neighbors 2 doors down. I can picture the deputy arriving and thinking,"Oh, this is where we caught those five guys breaking in when that teenager was home alone.)

Call for range day: Sometime in January. By then I just accepted the first date offered.

                            Range day: 4/29/2017

                            Call to pick up: 5/4/2017

                            Elapsed time: 15 months

Commentary: It is clear that they've added resources since the surge last year and are moving at a really efficient clip now. (Not an efficient magazine.) It's amazing how many hoops there are to jump through. But honestly, I kinda feel like people need some additional tactical training to be both safe and effective. I do appreciate how our Sheriff is committed to this program as part of their overall public safety strategy. It wouldn't have happened without that commitment at the top. And the consistent professionalism of the officers really made it seem like they were taking the vetting process seriously throughout. I could see how careless or impatient applicants wouldn't make it through the vetting process.

As for logistics, they had signs up at 0745 and people directing traffic. But those people were gone by 9am I imagine. Range time was very efficient. They got 80 people through by 1430 and they did it safely and consistently. Debrief and headed home by 1500.

Also impressed by the cadets we ran into, and how automatically respectful they were of us citizens. I've been impressed with their training facility and philosophy for a long time. I'm glad they take training so seriously.

I also appreciate the folks on this board who provided a lot of useful guidance on what to expect. That definitely reduced surprises.

Fewer than under the last Sheriff.
Rod Hoops continued the old requirement of several written personal references, plus telephone references. Those references would then be asked for other references. I believe, but can't verify, that the written references had to be residents of the county, and none could be relatives.

That, and the employment letter were the two reasons I didn't apply in 2009.
Once the references were eliminated (we're pretty private and other than people I work with, maintain very few trusted friends, relatives are all out of state, most long-term friends have as well), I decided to take my chances with the employment letter that HR would be professional and keep it confidential.
Apparently they did, as there has been no blowback at work. My boss is aware that I have a permit (have been shooting with him) but that's it.

But honestly, I kinda feel like people need some additional tactical training to be both safe and effective.
Absolutely... but that is something that the person should take the initiative to seek out on their own.
I took the NRA Defensive Handgun class a couple of months after I got my permit.
Best $100 I've ever spent on training.

Yes, something where people are shooting at least 200 rounds under the supervision of an instructor. That will give them some confidence and hopefully safety proficiency.
