Be prepared to have more than personal defense.I wouldn't believe "what you have been told". Personal defense is fine but I'd expand upon that. A two word answer is just going to make your interview...interesting...when asked what do you mean.
They talk to your neighbors.
They make sure you actually live there and not just have a part time vacation place. Sometimes they say what it's for. I wish they wouldn't in most cases. Seems like they could just say it's for a County License or something.
I had my renewal class in November. We were told that personal defense was not enough. You must have a relevant reason............... Something as simple as I walk alone at night might be enough.Comment

Honestly due to my hours i work I have to go grocery shopping etc at 11 at night etc. So its common for me to have to go to an ATM, shopping, walking late at night in dark parking lots etc. Wonder if that will pass in SB county.Comment

Sounds like most likely it will.
In light of the overturn of Peruta, I get the feeling that they just want to cover their butts by having something intelligent documented on file.
They effectively are still issuing for general self defense, you just need to tell them WHY you feel that you are at risk.
Some of the "light green" and "yellow" counties want some specific threat, and that can be a perjury issue if you tell them that you feel that threatened but there is no record of contact to the police reporting any incidents.
But also, SBSD does not issue as a condition of employment and the permits are actually marked on the back "Not Valid For Employment"
Telling them that you need it FOR work would result in a denial, but specific risks related to your situation WHILE working would likely be helpful.
They basically don't want a bunch of "Rent-A-Cops" carrying without going through proper BSIS channels.- Rich

Anyone done it with the SBCS ?My town does not have a local PD so its Sheriff only. Also can we take the CCW class before we start the CCW process with the county? i know the AVGC has classes for a few more months.Comment

I told Deputy Diaz, I live in San Bernardino he said. "Thats good enough for me"

Apply now. It'll be 6 months to a year before your interview. The only question during the interview related to your guns will be "Are your guns registered to you?"
You have until range day to decide what you want to list on your permit.
I bought my G36 that is listed on my permit 2 days before I got the call that I was approved and scheduled for the range..
SBCS?Anyone done it with the SBCS?
All application and interview takes place at the main HQ on 3rd St in San Bernardino, with the exception of Redlands (Redlands PD handles all applicants), and Rancho Cucamonga and perhaps other offices have been assisting to take some of the load off of the HQ staff. Other than Redlands, the applications all begin the same way, if you will be handled by a field office you will be contacted and directed to them.

No.
Process is:
1 - Apply
2 - Wait (6-12 months?)While waiting, prepare for the interview. It is quite detailed and covers any LE encounters, arrests, reported crimes, motor vehicle accidents, drug/alcohol use current and history, etc....
3 - Interview
If the detective passes you on the interview, i.e. nothing immediately disqualifying, they take your postal money orders and direct you to Livescan. Until the point that you go to Livescan, your cost for the process is zero.
4 - Wait (90 days mininum, 120 typical)
While waiting, your investigating detective will contact your neighbors to verify your residence and character, your employer will be sent a form letter attesting to your character which must be returned
5 - Get notified of approval, schedule range date
wait 4-6 weeks
6 - Complete range class/qualification
wait 1-2 weeks
7 - Pick up permit

I don't talk to my neighbors they aren't going to get anything good out of it XD or they wont speak to them(im positive 4 of them would end up with visits of their own if you catch my drift). LoLComment

In my case, my HOA was repaving the parking lot. Diaz was worried that his car would be towed (marked unit?) so he just left his card with my wife after a couple of quick questions and asked her to have two neighbors call him.
The primary purpose is to verify that you actually live there. They'll ask very basic questions like how long they have known you, loud parties, arguments, etc...
Of course, in my case, I've been on the tax records for this place for over 20 years, two vehicles and several motorcycles, registered here...
Most common reason for denial is shenanigans on residency. There are a lot of people who live in LA but own cabins in the mountains. That's a no-go.- Rich

They don't know my name so XD hahah that will be good. They may have to show a picture though. residency will be totally fine, no parties, no arguments(live alone to boot). Well in 8 Days I will apply.Originally posted by WASR10When they did my residency check they didn't come to my door. But I was home and just happen to watch the detective go to two of my neighbors' houses. I don't speak to the people at one house but the lady at the other house said the detective only said he was conducting a residency check and asked if she knew me to be the resident at my address. Piece of cake.
