Can confirm checking back works. I submitted my application on 7/8. Originally got a date in early March. Kept checking over and over again then got a date in late January. Not great but I'll take it...

Then last night at 12:45am I saw an opening for 7/27.

Checking back for sure pays off.

      SCORE!

(And, for those paying attention, there is now a date in January open...)

This thread is great- very informative! My permit expires at the end of Sept, so I came here to see how much in advance I should take the course and submit the renewal application.

Based on what I am reading here, I will schedule my 4-hour course for early September and then submit the application 1-2 weeks before the expiration.

If you do that, there is a good probability that your license will expire before it’s renewed.

You should follow the renewal instructions, (bottom of page) and submit the application at the 45-day mark.
RENEWALS – We recommend that you renew your permit 45 days in advance of your current expiration date to ensure no lapse in your CCW coverage. There is a 60-day grace period if you let your permit expire. However, if you fail to submit your Renewal Application and scan and upload your training and qualification documents within the 60-day grace period, you will have to start the process over as a New Applicant. Also, please remember that if your CCW Permit expires, you cannot carry your CCW until your permit is renewed.

Note: Your new expiration date is the date the permit is approved/printed. Current expiration dates on your permit will not be carried over to the newly renewed permit. Therefore, if you apply well in advance of your current expiration date you will be forfeiting the remainder of the days that are left on your current permit.
That gives staff the ability to vet the documents and prepare the file. Hold the training cert until 1-2 weeks before renewal. That will trigger their action to cut the license. If you provide all documentation too early, your license will be renewed early. Submit it too late, and, we’ll, it will be late. (Recent example of process time with everything submitted.)

This is also noted in FAQ #5
#5. Is there a grace period after my permit expires that allows me to still carry my CCW permit after it expires?

There has NEVER been a grace period that allowed permit holders to continue to carry their CCW after their permit expired. We recommend you submit your online Renewal Application 30-45 days prior to your permit’s expiration date and scan/upload your training and qualification documents simultaneously or soon thereafter.

We understand that some permit holders’ permits may expire before we are able to process their Renewal Permit and we deeply apologize for this. Staff is working very hard to minimize the impact on our valued Permit Holders. We greatly appreciate your understanding and patience while we work to decrease the overwhelming demand for renewal permits. We cannot provide an estimate as to when your permit will be processed.

Just a quick question hope I can get an answer. So when I applied the ccw permit I only put my cz p01 on the application, but now I’m considering to buy a m&p shield too, my interview is in mid august am I still be able to add the shield to my permit without additional fees or have to submit a modification? Thanks in advance.

Yes you are. I recently had my interview and they mentioned that you can have three on there and they would like you to have the gun listed but what you qualify with will be on there up to 3.

it is very easy I was nervous for no reason. They just go over your application and explain to you what happens next.

Hey guys. I had a quick question regarding the CCW timeline...

The wording on the Sacramento CCW pages suggestions that we apply, interview, get training, then receive our CCW. This assumes backgrounds pass etc...

But people online (not from Sacramento) always mention doing the training first and then the interview months later.

Am I misunderstanding Sacramento’s guidelines? Or are we slightly different than other counties / states?
