    I need a LIFE!!
    • Feb 2009

First time I ever knowingly voted for a democrat in my LIFE, (my first vote was for Reagan re-election) was because of the SDCGO recommendation, the people that worked so hard to get me a CCW in the first place. I can't dismiss that endorsement so easily nor was it an easy thing for me to do. That part of the ballot was left blank quite a while for me. Nobody knows for sure what will happen with who wins later. Especially as the new Sucramento CCW laws may or may not hit us. It's possible were boned either way. I've learned republican doesn't always mean what it's supposed to mean in San Diego too often.
I get both sides of this. Not a pleasant choice.
Given SDCGO has worked with Martinez and there is an existing dialog that has produced results, if anything they have her ear, and if she wins, she should remember who endorsed her. She was there as Gore finally succumbed to issuing after years of not doing so. We have had exemplary behavior from CCW holders, I cannot recall any negative incidents making news or otherwise, she would know that. So just thinking stick with what was working. Could I be wrong? Vote I will regret? Sure. I have no idea what the future holds.

I'm renewing my permit for the second time now and each time I've gone through this the process has changed a bit. Now you can't renew your permit until you're within 45 days of your expiration (used to be 90 days). So I just submitted my renewal application on line.

For those of you that have RECENTLY renewed, can I now just go and take my renewal class...or do I need to wait to hear something from the sheriff's department first?

        Thanks!

Hemmerling is NOT anti 2A, and a strong supporter of CCW. Multi-tour Battalion Commander in Iraq, clear PRO 2A message, and NO back-up data to support the claims he's anti-2A. Dig deeper on this, and give the guy a chance.

There is backup data...you just haven't looked hard enough.

The dude was instrumental in creating/defining San Diego's Red Flag law...this isn't disputed. He has also lectured across the state and helped other cities with their Red Flag laws. Again, this is NOT disputed.

He may be Pro CCW but he's a far cry from what I would call Pro 2a. Red Flag laws are a clear violation of due process and clearly unconstitutional. They are EXACTLY the type of authoritarian tyranny our Founders were worried about.

That's a straw man argument - he didn't create Red Flag Laws, and San Diego does not "have" a Red Flag law - it's a state law, and WHOEVER is Sheriff will enforce GVROs - Hemmerling OR Martinez. I'm as 2A as the best of them, but I'm working to change policy by voting on the State and Federal level. Both candidates will make a good Sheriff, but Hemmerling is NOT anti-2A, and you have to ask why that message has been promoted over the past few months.

Yeah. Just got my approval. Anyone go through the 8 hour have any tips or what is involved?
                  Is it timed?
                  What range yards?
                  How many rounds fired? I've seen 75, 100, 150, and 200.
What holsters are approved? IWB? OWB?
                  What clothing would you recommend?
Anything I haven't covered that would help.
I've seen a few different local courses. I've also seen one that is mostly online with a range qual in Rainbow. Kind of a drive for an East County SD guy....
                  Thank you in advance.

I applied early september and my interview date is in June of next year. Ya'll are smart for applying early. I've been checking for free appointments everyday but haven't had any luck! Anyone have any tips for securing an earlier appointment?

The qualification course is well-documented on the SDSO website

My initial 8 hours class had been a few years back in 2016, I’ve taken with Bill Desy at the Glock store, the range was 7-10yards and no time.
I qualified with 3 guns different calibers, 9mm, .40 and 10mm. I’ve shot a little over 50 rounds per gun.
No holster draw so I used combo of IWB/OWB that I had.
For clothing, I just wore a pair of jeans and comfortable long sleeve shirts with eyes and ears protection and baseball cap.

For my renewals, I have been going to Kyle Dau at Discount Gun Mart at Moreno Blvd. The shooting portion is less rounds per gun but I shot more than required. Just think of it as extra range time since I already paid for the range fee.

I recommend bring extra rounds. Who do you plan to take the class with?

These are my current three I am considering.

Pluses are, most is online with only a short range time.
Negative is, it is in Rainbow a good hour drive.

Pluses is close by with Sat and Sun availability. Close to me in East County, and last but not least it seems as though they have a good rep.

Pluses are they seem friendly when I went there last time. Nice new range.
Negatives a bit of a drive but hey they supply lunch.

Now all I need is someone who moved into Kalifornia with a Stacato or an Infinity that they want to get rid of.

Here is the information from the San Diego Sheriff CCW Page. This is what is required by the state. There have been instances where the CCW class has you do some other stuff. In my initial CCW course at Discount Gun Mart (Morena) four years ago, they also had us do hip shooting. This had been dropped two years ago when I did my last renewal. But hip shooting has never been a state requirement to the best of my knowledge. YMMV.

From the 7 yard line 5 Rounds Two-hand grip
From the 5 yard line 5 Rounds Two-hand grip
From the 3 Yard line 3 Rounds One-hand (Strong only)
From the 3 Yard line 2 Rounds One-hand (Weak only)

In order to pass the qualification course of fire, applicants must have 11 of the 15 Rounds fired either hit on the line of or inside of the target. If applicant cannot demonstrate proficiency, then the license cannot be granted.
Note that you are not required to draw from a holster (no holster required). It's purely shoot when ready and at your own pace. It is not timed. Wear whatever you want. There are 15 rounds required for qualifying with each gun...at least according to the state requirement. So multiply that by how many pistols you intend to qualify with. And I bring plenty of extra ammo in case you class throws something else into the mix and/or in case you fail a course and have to repeat it.
