San Diego CCW

Has anyone developed their good cause in SD based on their risks being a driver for one of the many new delivery services where you drive your own car such as Uber, Lyft, Postmates, Uber Eats, Grub Hub, etc?

I'm pretty sure the Sheriff Dept won't give you a ccw based on being an Uber or Lyft driver since their policy is no firearms.

Our "No Weapons" policy applies when you are doing business as a representative of Lyft, which includes times that you are driving for Lyft, as well as times that you are visiting a Lyft Hub.

A very interesting question. The Sheriff's policy focuses on the applicant's heightened risk. That risk exists whether or not the applicant is in violation of the employer's policy. The employer will almost never find out unless the weapon has to be drawn, and in any case, all the employer could do is fire the applicant. It seems not too different from carrying into a restaurant where they have a no firearms policy. All they can do is ask you to leave, and I don't think that is considered a reason to revoke a permit, so why should it be a reason to deny a permit. I know the Sheriff can do whatever he wants here, I'm wondering if we have any actual data. I also wonder about other services that don't carry passengers and what their policy is.

Good Moral Character: if you intentionally and willfully violate the terms of the contract you sign with Uber/Lyft (i.e., you intentionally breach your contract creating civil liablity), that shows a lack of GMC. That's my GUESS. Makes the Sheriff wonder what terms of your CCW permit are you planning to violate (no carry in bars, no drinking while carrying, etc)

I had my seconded interview on 3/15/19. I was informed the review process generally takes 60-90 days. If I am approved I will get an email with information on how to proceed, if I am denied I will get a letter in the mail. The whole process has been relatively pleasant.

Still waiting. I got a call from a background investigator last week to clarify a few things on my application.

After a long wait for my March 5th in-person interview I just received my approval on Wednesday April 17th this week!

I was quoted a 60-90 day wait before I would hear back on whether I would be approved, but was impressed that it only took them 43 days. Was able to schedule my 8 hour CCW course the very next day with James Murphy (awesome instructor BTW) and just went back to the Sheriff's office today to pay my remaining fee, drop off my CCW course certificate and pick up my permit.

From what I gathered it appears the Sheriff's office is doing a great job at streamlining the process with the influx of applications.

Quite the process, but I am happy to finally have my CCW.

I've been encouraging others as much as I can, some firearm owners can
actually be rather lazy about the whole thing, like voting...grrrrr.
But I keep reminding them to get it going. It's important to post on the interwebz news sites where there are local crime stories where an armed person would have made all the difference. From the usual local victim story to an "The Armed Citizen" NRA self defense success story.

I know people often want to keep it quiet they have achieved their CCW for obvious reasons, concealed is concealed, but that being said I think it's time to kick it in and encourage everyone you can in ways you feel comfortable.
The gate is open, join and support SDCGO to keep it open, and work to make it open wider for everyone. There will be a new Sheriff one day after all and the more CCW issued the better to establish that we won't go back to the bad old days. Worst thing is to take it for granted right now.

Now THAT is a truly excellent idea! Reaching out to other gun owners is a bit like preaching to the choir. Turning a non-owner to a owner or a non-carrier into a carrier is where the leverage is. That is a great way to reach a receptive audience.
