I'm no newbie here, Steele peak is no secret.
Everyone knows about it...google. The people who trash it are the same people who think boozing and shooting is a great idea. It's the 10% rule. 10% of society will be morons, don't be that 10% and if you are I'm sure your not going to change your ways. So stop whining and go have clean safe fun. This is a forum

Its no secret, I've known of it for 20+ yrs. Hell, its 20 minutes from my house. But its just smart not to broadcast it, even if someone can find it by other means. These places are like rare gems, too hard to find.

"...which from their verbosity, their endless tautologies, their involutions of case within case, and parenthesis within parenthesis, and their multiplied efforts at certainty by saids and aforesaids, by ors and by ands, to make them more plain, do really render them more perplexed and incomprehensible, not only to common readers, but to lawyers themselves. A) Both of you SHUT THE HELL UP!!!
          It's like watching children fight.

          B) Nate you and those like you are why there are fewer and fewer shooters in California.
You don't want anyone 'new' going out to 'your' secret spot but I have ten bucks that says when bad legislation passes you're complaining that there aren't enough of us calling or doing something.

Here's a tip for you, we're outnumbered in this State and always will be as long as we run off new shooters and make them feel unwelcome.

Who's running off new shooters. Point was about posting on public forums about shooting areas. More often then not, they get shut down due to trash and unsafe shooters.

We have seen it happen many times. There are many on this thread that will pm directions, volunteer for a clean up, or contact the BLM.

By the way, you would lose your ten bucks. I write my letter, make my calls and send my emails. If others don't want to do, that's there choice. Will I ***** about the new laws, absolutely. I do now. If these laws pass we all lose.

Calling people demeaning names and telling them they can't know where the 'good spots' are sure as hell is running people off.
It's the same kind of elitist crap that we get pissed at when our legislators tell it to us.
We're not 'the right kind of people' to be allowed to defend ourselves according to them and 'newbies' aren't 'the right kind of people' to be shooting at 'secret spots'.

Yes we have, that's why instead of hiding shooting spots, there are few enough as it is, we organize clean up efforts, work with the Dept. of Forestry and educate shooters at the spots.

'Hiding' them is not the answer and never works, being a responsible shooter and teaching others to do the same is what works.

The ten buck was not that you call, but that you feel there aren't enough gun owners and shooters who do.

We all know they are not secret, posting them on a public forum is ridiculous. How many open shooting areas have been shut down. Steele peak will be next. It gets trashed and from reading some of the post, it's become unsafe.

The "secret spots" are not secret. I was brought to my new shooting area a few years ago by another on this forum. Luckily, those members here that know about it, don't publicly post it's location. A lot of people go there, and it's clean and safe. If they posted it, it would look like Steele Peak.

Being a responsible shooter and teaching others always works. But when you post it on a public forum and the masses go, you can't. It ends up being the Wild West. Then the closures get put on the news, and us shooters look bad.

Was calling the new member a "newbie" wrong, probably. But so does calling members Aholes for not wanting to give directions. If the new member would have done a search, he would have found the directions, including GPS location on another thread.

LoL. I gave someone coordinates so that he could meet me there on Friday and he punched them into google and got the intersection off the main road (which was where I told him to wait for me) and he drove past it because he was not familiar with the area.

This is a double edged sword. I too do not readily give out locations on places to shoot in forums that anybody can access FOR THAT REASON. Personally I am glad that all of these jackasses and their i-phones are getting bad directions from apple... Let them look it up, and end up in Lake Elsinore. Sadly though I do not have a better solution other than to just not say anything. Well, I will see what they have contributed in the forums, but if someone just shows up and asks then they are not getting info from me. If they have a certain number of posts and by looking at their posts they seem like decent folks who have also contributed or just seem like decent folks, I will take the chance and PM them if they are asking because yes, it IS free, but JUST because it is free does not mean that EVERYBODY should know where it is. (double edged sword time). I guess it is for the SAME reason why folks do not like to give out their favorite hunting spot or their favorite fishing spot. Cause everyone will go there and they just lost their favorite spot... This is MY opinion and that is fine if anyone cares to disagree with it. I really could care less. I also do enjoy telling people that I think would greatly benefit from knowing where it is and especially if I know them and they are like minded and responsible enough to clean up after themselves. Maybe when I get a new truck I will set aside a bin or space to pack a small amount of garbage out every time I go. Right now I will have to settle for taking out a bucket full of shells or shotty hulls (thanks to the jerks that left about 200 PINK hulls all over behind the hill on Friday. I got most of them and now they are in my recylce bin). AT least it was clean enough to chrony and shoot a little bit. I think I also picked up about 2 lbs of lead from the hill side. If there is an easier and convenient way to recover lead then walking around and picking it up, please someone inform me. I like public shooting spots because I REALLY like to look for cases and lead so that I can take it back and save it to melt down at a later time. It would sure save me from prying open some car batteries that I have sitting around.

I think the real problem goes back to the internet crowd and technology. Technology has made too many people impatient so they (and by they I mean all kinds) look up places to go shoot and then go shoot, and they really have no business going to a FREE spot because of their bad habits but they go there anyways and they don't give a damn and leave things behind because they are hipsters and the last time they looked, wooden frames are biodegradable and so are cardboard boxes that bullets came in and so are... And that rationalizing is what is bad for the shooters that use that location. But who cares, its free and everyone should get a chance to go there right? Just like healthcare, EVERYONE should be able to have affordable (and by affordable, we mean free if you can not afford it) healthcare...

There, fixed it; sarcasm tags ON...

It's not good enough that when we go shooting on BLM land that we cleanup our stuff. We have to make it clean enough so that it doesn't encourage others to leave trash. That means removing all evidence of all target material (TVs, furniture, tanks, stands), general trash (beer bottles, food wrappers, etc.), shotgun hulls (the colors make it look really), clay pigeons (even though it's biodegradable, it looks like sh*t and most BLM areas want it picked up anyway), and then brass.

If the shooting area is spotless, then it's easier for the ranger or other LEO to enforce / prosecute the scumbags.

Here's a small area I saw 9 months ago. It's now shut down. BTW, there's a jet ski in front of the big rock behind the cheap target stand. Sad.

I ride dirt bikes, the same rule applies. Never give out your riding spots. Too many people show up, it gets dangerous, people start dumping trash, sounds familiar.

I started off as a private member of Rockpile, the county shut it down. Then I moved down the hill and around the back side, also shut down. I moved further down the road, now the whole road is shut down.

Now there is one sandy ridge where everyone is jammed together.

I have been watching Steele peak area get smaller and smaller and I have only been out there for three or four years.
