What amazes me here is the amount of people that immediately jump on the discrimination bandwagon after barely reading the post, then get out the torches and pitchforks.

If an employee of an FFL suspects a straw purchase, he should refuse the sale. Simple as that. And in this case, if you took a damn minute to breath before getting indignant and raving, and looked at it from the employee's point of view you would easily see that what the OP described is a textbook straw purchase scenario.

I don't know the details behind SB's purchase, but in CA, the law is explicitly set up so that under certian circumstances people can only own a firearm if a parent or older spouse buys it for them. That isn't a straw purchase as the intent has nothing to do with concealing the identity of the true purchaser.

Yup, it could also include somebody who was not prohibited but didn't want a DROS with their name on it so they get a FRIEND to buy it for them.

You pointed out an entirely correct statement from a dealer who was talking about a FRIEND buying a gun for a FRIEND. I'm sorry you are too dense to see the difference. If you had an FFL, I wouldn't consider going there.

I said that what you explained happened with the clerk would be considered a straw purchase from the way you went about it, regardless of whether or not the end result was the same(a legal transfer), and scared the clerk into thinking it was a straw purchase. The clerk has probably been told repeatedly by management to halt the sale no matter what and don't continue. So even though you explained what was going on afterwards, you still described a straw purchase with the only difference being the IT portion(which still happens AFTER the sale, not during).

Buying a gift for a son
"I'll fill that out since I'm buying it as a gift for my son"

I m sorry to hear about your bad experience with Big 5. I ve had good ones so far! Sometimes laws just dont make sense but we still have to live by them. The sales person was clearly looking out for his safety and liability issues.

I think it was all a misunderstanding. When I read the OP, I immediately thought that the clerk had probably suspected a straw purchase - I'm glad to see that so many other people chimed in on that.

As for me, I can do my own gun deals and don't take a man with me as I don't need "help". I figure that, if I'm a big enough girl to own a gun, then I can put on my big girl pants and go to the shop by myself.

When I went to DROS a handgun earlier this year, my conversation with the clerk came around to the point that I had come in alone. I told him that I hadn't considered bringing a male friend because that's not how I roll. He said something to the effect of, "I noticed that you hadn't brought any men with you; that's a good thing because it would have worked against you if you had."

I'll just point out one last time that the son you are talking about in example two would be just as ineligible as the son in example one. But yeah, I think I've heard enough of the same flawed argument to be done.

You don't get it. It's the same example, all I did was word it differently and the wording that the clerk hears is what's going to make them think it's a straw purchase. I even said the end result would be the same, yet you just come back and throw more insults because you can't understand the concept?
