What amazes me here is the amount of people that immediately jump on the discrimination bandwagon after barely reading the post, then get out the torches and pitchforks.

If an employee of an FFL suspects a straw purchase, he should refuse the sale. Simple as that. And in this case, if you took a damn minute to breath before getting indignant and raving, and looked at it from the employee's point of view you would easily see that what the OP described is a textbook straw purchase scenario.

This place has gone to hell in a handbasket over the last two years.

the ladies forum hasn't existed for two years yet...or has it? or are you meaning calguns in general?

        Obviously a math major here!

Boyfriend, Girlfriend, Clerk |= 2 sides to the story, it = 3 sides to the story.

One side out of three sides |= 1/4, it = 1/3

Oh yeah, in the OP she said she was posting using her boyfriend's account, so it is highly likely that he is a member.

You were doing the paperwork because your wife couldn't. That would have been a straw purchase. Just like when Sarah Brady bought a gun for her son.

            From the CGF Wiki
            What is a STRAW PURCHASE?
A straw purchase is when a buyer uses an intermediary (the "straw man") to purchase a firearm(s) from a licensed firearms dealer. The purpose is to hide the true identity of the actual purchaser of the firearm(s).

Straw purchases are a felony violation of the Gun Control Act of 1968 for both the straw purchaser (who can be charged with lying on Federal Form 4473) and the actual possessor.

Frequently, the actual purchaser is a prohibited person under federal law
It doesn't just mean buying for a prohibited person, or the bolded sentence wouldn't be necessary.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

I don't know the details behind SB's purchase, but in CA, the law is explicitly set up so that under certian circumstances people can only own a firearm if a parent or older spouse buys it for them. That isn't a straw purchase as the intent has nothing to do with concealing the identity of the true purchaser.

Yup, it could also include somebody who was not prohibited but didn't want a DROS with their name on it so they get a FRIEND to buy it for them.

So if a 20 year old wants a handgun, and their father says, I'll fill that out for them since they are under age, you think that is a "straw purchase"? If you are that stuck on stupid, I can't help you.

                Only in FUDland.
I said that what you explained happened with the clerk would be considered a straw purchase from the way you went about it, regardless of whether or not the end result was the same(a legal transfer), and scared the clerk into thinking it was a straw purchase. The clerk has probably been told repeatedly by management to halt the sale no matter what and don't continue. So even though you explained what was going on afterwards, you still described a straw purchase with the only difference being the IT portion(which still happens AFTER the sale, not during).

Yes, a 20 year old can have their father buy them a handgun. The difference?

                Sounds like a straw purchase:
"Let me fill that out, he isn't eligible to do it"

Buying a gift for a son
"I'll fill that out since I'm buying it as a gift for my son"

You really don't see the difference even though the end result is the same?

                And weren't you done here?

I m sorry to hear about your bad experience with Big 5. I ve had good ones so far! Sometimes laws just dont make sense but we still have to live by them. The sales person was clearly looking out for his safety and liability issues.

As for me, I can do my own gun deals and don't take a man with me as I don't need "help". I figure that, if I'm a big enough girl to own a gun, then I can put on my big girl pants and go to the shop by myself.

When I went to DROS a handgun earlier this year, my conversation with the clerk came around to the point that I had come in alone. I told him that I hadn't considered bringing a male friend because that's not how I roll. He said something to the effect of, "I noticed that you hadn't brought any men with you; that's a good thing because it would have worked against you if you had."

But yeah, I think I've heard enough of the same flawed argument to be done.
You don't get it. It's the same example, all I did was word it differently and the wording that the clerk hears is what's going to make them think it's a straw purchase. I even said the end result would be the same, yet you just come back and throw more insults because you can't understand the concept?

Are you done for real now? Because the rest of us were having a discussion before you decided to reply and troll.

You're the one that decided this thread needed someone to start insulting others. No one was calling anyone stupid, claiming that any part of the discussion was like talking to a wall, etc. until YOU brought it to this thread.

I think this is the Ladies forum. It can also be the Gentleman and Ladies forum. But it is not the Off Topic Forum.

I notice few ladies post here anymore.... Hope that picks back up later this spring.

Soldier, thank you for the clarification.

why can't the guys take their fight into their own sandpit? isn't there a forum elsewhere that would be appropriate to continue this argument?

this is the ladies forum. why are guys duking it out here? i understand the desire to make sure accurate info is given. but that does not seem to be the purpose of the exchange....give it a break guys.
