Boyfriend should have just reassured the clerk by buying his own Mossberg 500 too. Cant be a straw if both people are purchasing one, this could have been his chance to earn points, hehe.

      this reeks of straw.
Seriously, Im on the gun store clerks side. If you really want it, go in there any buy it by yourself without your boyfriend present.

Send a complaint to Big 5 Corporate headquarters in El Segundo. It is on their website. They are very responsive and will fix this.

My question is; is not a straw purchase only a Straw, if the (Straw)person is prohibited from buying one themselves.. I believe you can buy a gun for a GF/ BF as a Gift.. I don't like big 5 at all, but I am glad they still sell guns... in the state... My GF had a bad time at one years ago..they would not take a $15 check.. so she has NEVER done business with them again.. that was 15 years ago.. there are a lot of other dealers who will take your money, so if they don't play, don't pay.. when I worked at a sporting good store , we would recommend the purchase of a gift certificate in the name of the soon to be buyer .

I would have denied the purchase especially if your bf looks like a thug

You have to understand that in a video circulated to teach about spotting straw purchases, they show a man and woman shopping several firearms together. Then the woman initiates purchasing the handgun the man was just looking over.

Your description of your behavior might have been interpretted this way. If CA was a shall issue state, you and the bf could show the clerks you're already legally armed and this sort of misunderstanding would bevome a thing of the past.

Next time go in and say, " I want to buy that shotgun right there!!". Start the paperwork, pay and leave.

Dont say, "Hey honey, do U think this shotgun will work for U?". "How does it feel?" "Do U like it?" etc. etc. etc.

Those minimum wage knuckleheads @ Big 5 arent the best and brightest. They're probably 1 step above McDonald employees.

I use to buy Firearms from Turneres/Big5 because they had the best deals. Not becuz they have great customer service or they actually knew anything about firearms in general. No need to chit chat.

See it, buy it, pick up in 10days.

Akjunkie is right... On your own, you wouldn't have aroused any suspicion.

I have to disagree that the Big 5 policy or its employee was doing anything wrong... even at a more together gun store, this behavior would set off alarm bells in the heads of any responsible clerk.

Maybe in a shop with more saavy salespersons, they'd know how to Q&A you AND the b/f a little to learn that neither of you are prohibited.

However, the Big 5 employee was doing his job in recognizing the signs of a straw purchase.

Did you phone them back and talkl to the sales manager? Has your guy bought a firearm from that Big 5 in the past?

Lots of girls buy guns for their prohibited boyfriends - I went into big 5 with my (at the time) girlfriend and the clerk, although he seamed suspicious, went along and did the DROS. I was actually surprised that he did even though it was obvious to me he was suspicious.. I would have thought he shouldn't do it. When nearly everything was done he asked why she wanted the shotgun... she said "Because my boyfriend has 3 and I want one too."
after that I could see his suspicion fade as the manager came over and we talked about the shotgun I had purchased there over a month ago.
you don't rise to the occasion,
you just fall back on your level of training.

I bought the Mossberg shotgun combo from Big 5 a while back and did not have any issues. The assistant manager was somewhat surprised by what I was buying but was very helpful with the purchase and the DROS paperwork. He answered my questions better than some of the gun shops I had visited.

I like Big 5. They offer some good deals on firearms from time to time. Once in a while their employees are dolts but that can happen anywhere.

Going back a few years ago I had not bought a gun in MANY years. I read all the horror stories about DROS problems so as a test I went down to buy one of those $89.00 Rossi 20 gaugers. The local B5 did not have it but they did in a neighboring city so I drove down. It DROSed without a problem and the people were very nice. I've enjoyed the gun too!
