I am glad that you choose to be informed and not just one of the people that follow the crowd. As far as doing the right thing, that does not mean always following orders. Orders can be wrong and against the law or department policy. I myself have refused to follow orders that violated policy and did not get in trouble for doing so. As long as you are following department policy and the law, people can complain all they want, but in the long run, unless there is corruption or politically correct cowardice involved at a high level, you will not get in trouble.

I totally get it. If I were still wet behind the ears, tatted all to hell and gone, and dressed like a criminal I would probably hate LEO's too.
When I was their age I was a street racer and a punk too. I probably spent as much time cuffed in the back of a Dodge as any two of them. I was never beet up, never framed, and never treated worse than I earned.
LEO's then were actually my friends, I just didn't know it. Now, I am older and wiser and LEO's are truly on my side.
If someone doesn't trust LEO's perhaps they should take a long hard look at what they are doing to make LEO's their enemy.Only slaves don't need guns

Why don't you read my post above. I did absolutely nothing wrong yet this still happened. I used to be like you. I pretty much always thought that cops only messed with dirtbags and for the most part still believe this is true. I guess I needed to see it for myself for me to believe that yes regular law abiding people do sometimes get victimized by bad apples.Last edited by StuckInTheP.R.O.Ca; 09-16-2014, 5:27 PM.__________________________________________________ _____________

Every interaction I've been in with the police has been negative but not to the point where I wouldn't call the police if something really bad was going down.
But then again it would have to be really bad, as in life threatening. So far I have never had to call the police in my life.Originally posted by RookieShooterOne of the theory is that the hormones they put in the milk. I totally agree with you, it all boils down to budgets. During my hooking and booking days as a TO, I took a lot of bad guys to jail. I wasn't nearly the best but I was no slug. The problem with community oriented policing where I worked, is that it took away from actual people responding to calls. They cut patrol units in order to fund more COPPS positions.
The COPPS units were also a well known place for slugs to go hide and do the bare minimum to collect their paychecks. Some of the people did good work, but most were slugs IMO.
If I worked in a slow city where we were not backed up calls 24/7 I might me more supportive. I would have rather had those bodies in a black and white responding to calls.
When I went to my COPS Team, my arrest stats went WAY down, but I felt I was doing some of the best police work of my career. We dealt with quality of life stuff, otherwise known as "The Broken Windows" theory.
But I totally agree with you, if the budget doesn't call for full deployment of both, then I would elect to staff the black and whites.

I was once asked in court, "Do you trust a fellow officer more than the public?" I replied, "Yes with out a doubt". The defence then asked why? I replied because my life depends on it. I never believed what the public told me, I listened to their "story" then made my decision of what to do next. I never belived every ones story, Suspects/Detained persons are like little kids lying to their parents. It was my job to get to the truth and the public would be afraid to be a stand up person and do the right thing, There said it!!!!Comment

Very true, unfortunately most supervisors I worked for did not care. Maybe if I worked for a small agency it would have been different, but most supervisors I had were looking to just move on and promote.
When I first went to patrol they posted self generated arrest stats in the report room. Some slugs complained, and they stopped doing it. unfortunately I think the PC BS has taken over in a lot of departments. Don't want to hurt anyone's feeling.

Sorry if I wrongly interpreted your opinion but the interpretation I got from the tone of what you wrote seemed to indicate that the only people that distrust the Police, distrust them because they are in one of the negative categories you mentioned. Basically if you don't like the Police its because your a scumbag. You aren't the only one here I have gotten this vibe from. So is it your belief that someone can have a legitimate reason to distrust the Police without being in one of the categories you mentioned?__________________________________________________ _____________

I believe that what you post is not by accident or the misunderstanding of peoples meanings, what you post, and what you distort, you do so intentionally. The problem that you will have here in this forum is that the BS that people pull in OT is not tolerated.Sorry if I wrongly interpreted your opinion but the interpretation I got from the tone of what you wrote seemed to indicate that the only people that distrust the Police, distrust them because they are in one of the negative categories you mentioned. I am doing everything I can to keep this civil and now this. All I did was ask you a question after telling you how I interpreted your words. How am I pulling any BS. You can clear up this supposed distortion by answering this simple question. This is a great opportunity to clarify your position. My question again. Can someone have legitimate reasons to distrust the Police and not be in one of the categories you mentioned? Or to simplify. If someone distrusts the police are they a scumbag?Last edited by StuckInTheP.R.O.Ca; 09-16-2014, 6:37 PM.__________________________________________________ _____________

My post was very clear to those who don't want to distort it's meaning, so there is no reason to address your deliberate misinterpretation. I am going to keep this civil and simply state that I not going to play silly OT games on the LEO forum. Have a nice day.I am doing everything I can to keep this civil and now this. Working in LE is rough and it's not something I'd choose to do. For those that chose this career, I have nothing but respect for them. I would like to believe, that the majority in your profession mean well.
Like with most professions, customer service is key. I know you're not out there selling goods and services, but each of you interact with people/citizens. It reminds me of this quote I saw on linkedin

I was going to share my own negative experience, but I changed my mind. I didn't want what I have to share to be mistaken as an attempt to bash fellow members that had nothing to do with my incident.
I just hope the whole "us against them mentality" can stop. I'm referring to civilians as much as I am with LE. We're all responsible for the change we want in the world. It just doesn't help when the media gets a hard on and pins us against each other for the sake of ratings.

Thank you. What some don't seem to realize is that for every negative experience that they can think of with LE, a LEO can probably come up with 100 negative experiences that they had with some member of the public. The LEOs that I worked with did not let these negative experiences control what they thought of the public as a whole, and I'm sure that they would hope that the public would grant them the same consideration. The simple truth is that the safest cities are those where the population and the police work together as a team.Working in LE is rough and it's not something I'd choose to do. For those that chose this career, I have nothing but respect for them. I would like to believe, that the majority in your profession mean well.

No one needs to argue about their point of view in this thread. That was not my intention. I was just concerned about the subject.
I think a personal experience plays a big role on the impression of the organization, where one experience IS IT. And, the perception through the media plays a big roles, too.
Unfortunately, for media, the story doesn't sell unless it is sensational this day and age. What more is stronger than police misconduct or some related subject? Every time I spoke to a reporter, I rarely see the story that was true to my interview. Many times, they changed the story the way they wanted it for the most part. I don't know if the reporter was ignorant or doesn't care about the truth.
I just wish everyone understands it is a tough job, and we try to do our best, at least vast majority of us do.Comment
