The cops and doughnuts things goes back to a time before 7-11s, WalMarts, Safeways, and other 24hr chain stores when small urban doughnut shops were usually the only thing open for the guys working graveyard shifts... their choices were limited to coffee and doughnuts, so that's what they ate.

There was a time when the doughnuts shop was the only place open at 0300. If you wanted some coffee and something to eat it was either like doughnuts or don't eat.

These are the correct answers for the old Cop and the Donut jokes.

When I worked graveyard, there was no other establishment in the City to get a cup of Coffee after 2am. The Donut shops make the Donuts in the wee hours so they are fresh to be sold in the morning. I've watched them make very kind of Donut.

Today in the City where I worked, there are two all night convenience stores and a Safeway where you can get something.
