When I worked on the highway, I used the CHP every chance I could. As was mentioned, no one slows for us but they do for the blue lights.


There are two programs, Maintenance Zone Enhanced Enforcement Program (MAZEEP) and Construction Zone Enhanced Enforcement Program (COZEEP). I also had a CHP radio in my truck and could speak directly to the CHP.
It is OT and Caltrans pays it.

We used them once and over about 7 hours they wrote close to 20 tickets and made 2 DUI arrests.
Once I was standing in a closure talking to a CHP officer and a drunk drove up to us. We were clued in by the noise he was making dragging our metal sign standard and sign under the front of his car.

I guess I didn't realize it was as big of a problem as it really is. I figured the flashing lights on the work trucks would have been enough which is why I was confused.

CalTrans workers don't like getting run over any more than anyone else.

I thought caltrans had it in their union contract that they are to pay for minimum of two chp units to standby with lights on during night jobs.

Having done some freeway stops and assisting some motorists on the freeways, I would not want to stand on a freeway with cars flying by at night.

It's not in the employment contracts. I guess it could be inserted next to the $50 ($35 after taxes) boot allowance.
I always put in for 2 CHP but 2 weren't always available.

I concur. Especially since they tax it. And generally you need 3 pair of boots. Something for snow, something for summer and something disposable (cheap) for paving and crack sealing.

My snow boots were right at $200.
My summer boots $140.
My cheap boots $45.
No clothing allowance. I stopped wearing Levi 501s after ruining a pair at work. I'd go to Kmart and buy $13 trousers.
Then there's jackets/long johns/gloves for snow.

Being in a parked vehicle or worse, being on foot on the freeway is scary as hell. Too bad Joe citizen driving by yakking on his cell phone can't get a taste of that. Maybe that would silence some of the useless criticism of Caltrans/Chippies etc.

You get the initial pair issued, no? We get uniform allowance to buy subsequent pairs at our discretion. Some departments get annual boot issuance.

I helped out some stranded motorists on a freeway once recently. Saw the tire blowout in front of me, the stretch was really dark, so I pulled in behind them, got the arrow stick pointing left, got out and told them to call AAA and stay inside the car.

Of course, the occupants won't listen and insisted on coming out to look at the damage, so I had to order them back on the right side because they wanted to look at the left tire that blew out. Thankfully AAA got there fast.

Easily one of the scariest experiences in my LE career.
