The salute and lack of cover seem like dead giveaways to me. Seen fat pudgy guys in everything from Seals, SFs, Marine Recon...you name it. It's rare when they are on active duty, but you do see it every now and again. Once you have your trident, earn your beret or skull cap it is yours from then on, even if you leave that particular unit and end up riding a desk for 14 hours a day. Those units all have guys that ride desks, and they usually are pulled from their own ranks. A desk is hell on the body if you have the fat gene. When these guys enter civilian life they can ballon up just like the rest of us. A lot of my firearms instructors have some seriously impressive backgrounds, but 20 years of not doing it anymore played havok on their gut. I am pretty damn chubby these days, with a gut that would make Santa jealous, but I had a 6 pack back when I was in. 15 years of a desk job and working yourself to death will do that to ya.
That goes to other extreme as well. I've seen Marine Recon guys that were so damn skinny they looked like they would break if breathed on them wrong. Yet they were tough as nails.
My point, you can't judge a book by its cover. Somebody's current weight or build doesn't tell you what they accomplished at 18 through their 20s when youth was on their side. Most people go to hell when they move on and get older.
I've said it before, and I will say it again, I am not a big fan of confronting these guys or even paying attention at all to "posers". Not that they don't deserve to be called the jerks that they are. They do. But the odds are that if you confront a guy you think is a poser he is going to turn out to be legit. It is Murphy's law. I can't think of anything lower than accusing somebody who actually did serve their country honorably of being a liar. That is a major slap in the face. Insult to injury and all. Doesn't apply to the example in the OP. Lots of documentation on that particular guy. I just wouldn't run around trying to spot and confront posers on your own time. Not without a hell of a lot of proof. Lest you shame yourself big time.Last edited by tacticalcity; 09-10-2011, 6:35 PM.Comment

That's different. He's talking specifically about people walking around out in public trying to pass them off as servicement.
He's not talking about guys playing organized games like paintball or airsoft. I don't do either, but I have no issue with them. It does bother that somebody who didn't service would try to pretend they did. A lot of blood, sweat and tears goes into earning the right to wear the uniform.Comment

Actually, I just realized something.
When friends or acquaintances show pictures of themselves in military service they are ALWAYS with buddies around them who are serving with them at that time. If they are by themselves there are almost always only two situations they are posing for the camera.
1) They are standing in front of some oversees notable landmark (like the cross swords in Iraq).
2) They are in a Class A with the flag behind them in an official posed picture (but the only time I see those are on a wall). Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.Comment

Probably want to add standing in front of or sitting in the cockpit/drivers seat of some expensive and really cool peice of equipment like a plane or a tank. Or standing infront of some funny sign or oddity in camp or on base. Also, people tend to take pictures of their buddies when deploying. So the person with the camera might have just happened to walk upto them and say "smile" and they did so and got their picture taken but it wasn't planned or anything. I see and have been in lots of all of the above type photos.Actually, I just realized something.

Yea, I just neglected to get more detailed (backdrops that are clearly deployment related). One of my dad is in front of a Car wash in Vietnam, well, the sign says it's a car was, it really just a mud pit with a hose and water pump. He's standing there with his M16 (first gen folks :-) with NO MAGAZINE in it (so you KNOW it's a real photo, no one trusts soldiers with ammo
