RFID for permenant emplacement in guns

not happening...and if it does....
a) You will never hear about it.
b) If you do hear about it, you will also hear about the RFID destroyer tool. -
At the risk of answering a sarcastic question it might be used for police departments to track their gun inventory.
I'm sure someone will start screaming for this in every gun even though a folded piece of aluminum foil could probably defeat the system.Comment

Checkpoint and Sensormatic are two companies in the retail world suppling companies with RFID tracking tags (shoplift deterrent tags). Ten years ago they were offering to embed the tags INTO the packaging..into the container walls...INTO the item. All they needed was access to the manufacturing facility and they would design the best place to place the tag inside the manufacturing process.
For Aspirin it was either inside the walls of the box..nothing to peel away..or inside the plastic bottles label or under it..or INSIDE the lid.
Anything you buy right now can have an RFID in it RIGHT NOW...and you wouldn't even know it.Comment

I'd bet that within one year one of my friends may be putting a sort of RFID into handguns at the request of the owner. Heck, I may pay him to do that with mine.CGN's token life-long teetotaling vegetarian. Don't consider anything I post as advice or as anything more than opinion (if even that).Comment

What is the range for RFID detection? Isn't it fairly short? My Opinion - Worth What You Paid For It...

How about this... Put an RFID device activated solenoid on the Mag release button. Then a ring on your finger with the RFID chip. If you do not have the ring (tool in this case) the mag release can not be activated. The ring acts as the tool, without the tool located within inches of the RFID reader (Mag release button in this case) you can not release the Mag.Last edited by MaHoTex; 12-08-2010, 7:28 PM.NRA Life Member

OK, it turns out we're all a bit behind the times.
Talked to my friend and it's been done before. Both RFID and pingers. Some rather large customers were not happy - probably a matter of training. And no, no specifics as to who the customers were will be forthcoming.CGN's token life-long teetotaling vegetarian. Who in the world would trust this?
When millions of guns have already been produced without the tags? What value would it have in say, airport security? Absolutely none.
As far as tracking new guns, as has been mentioned, killing the tag would be easy. Just a dumb idea.Comment

if the RFID tag is passive it's generally short (inches) although it can be massive if the RFID reader is powerful enough.
With a powered RFID tag it can be up to 60 or 75 feet without high powered reception gear.NRA Patron Member
I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.
Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.
I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.
I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.Comment
