Awesome!! Bunch of YouTube videos on how to sharpen free hand.

I think that would have definitely helped. I did take the knife apart, pushed the pressed thumbstud/stop out with a vice, but the rest was free handing the blade in one hand and dremel in the other.

For fixed blade fans. Scrapyard has not released anything for quite a while, but they have a new Steel Heart variation right now with Res-C handles in 1095 steel!

I have confidence in their ability to properly heat treat, so I have no problems grabbing one of these in 1095. I love those rubber handles.

              The "TRASH1" is $139.95

crufflers, I may be putting up my Swamp Rat RatManDu up for sale here pretty soon. Mine is the rare Prototype version with a full flat grind instead of saber grind and has about an inch longer blade than the normal RMD. The problem I have with Busse/Swamprat/Scrapyard is they always round off the spine of their blades which makes it impossible to strike a firesteel with! Its just a requirement for me that my camping/survival knives be able to do that and I have no idea why Busse always "melts" their spines as they call it.

Anyway, its pictured below (in the middle), rarely taken out of the safe. I did wrap the handle with camo cling tape only because the black paper micarta scales, while very aesthetically pleasing, do not offer much grip, at least for me. The tape easily comes off without leaving any residue. Now, if this knife had a 90 degree spine and a Res-C handle it would probably be my all-time favorite!

I'll look out for that Ratmandu post. As far as melted spines, the only two I have like that are the Military (overrun) Regulators - looks cool on a .33" spine. The other parkerized version Regulators and the full flat grind and 6.5 have flat spines IIRC, and my 511, 711 LE (flat behind a bowie swedge), 911, Yard Guard, and SOD have flat spines. I have seen people polish a portion of the coating off the flat spine to strike fire steels. For me the round spines are the exception.

I kind of skipped over the Ratmandu sized knives since I have the 511, and a Rodent6 ordered... also have a Team Gemini Light Brigade on the way and that TRASH1. I have a ferro on the Team Gemini kydex, so I hope its usable otherwise it'll move to another sheath. I think those have flat spines as well.

Maybe you got yours when they were obsessed with Nuclear Meltdown.

Also worth mentioning, if you are in a real dire survival situation and need heat, even better than keys, folding knife, rock, etc... the actual blade of the knife will throw ferro sparks just fine regardless of a round spine. No need to rely on the spine especially when you have an tough steel like Infi, SR77 or SR101... they throw sparks fine. I use a whittling-like motion. So use the blade before you rub two sticks together. I have water-proof matches, vaseline dipped cotton, lighters, and magnesium firestarters too
