Yet another parking question

Ok... So I put the parts in hot water, with a degreaser. I used compressed air to dry the parts. Then I sprayed everything down with brake cleaner, throughly. Of course I had gloves on the whole time. Then I examined all the parts and resprayed them again with brake cleaner.

I am not going to take any chances with the contamination again. I will blast the parts tomorrow, as well as the tank. Then I will degrease the tank before I put the solution in.

Hopefully there will be no contamination tomorrow. If it does not turn out, I don't know what I will do. I probably will sell my tank if it does not work out.

I have found that lye based hot tank alkaline cleaners are best, but they will take your skin off if you dont take precautions. On lightly oiled parts, like new production items, good old Dawn detergent and brush with elbow grease works pretty good ("Effective On Grease" says so right on the label) You dont really need to blow dry them after the degrease. Your air may have oil and moisture in it. Try a hot water rinse and heat gun, or a drying cabinet with electric heat. Any flash rust will be taken care of in the blast cabinet. Quickly, lightly blow the blast media off and throw it in the tank.
No need to blast or degrease your tank, try "Barkeepers Friend" cleanser and a scratchie pad. It has some acid in it (oxalic??) that realy attacks rust, phosphating scale, and grease without much effort on your part. Just rinse it thoroughly with clean water and mix your solution. I think you are overthinking this with the redundant degreasing steps. In fact, I suspect the brake cleaner is some of your problem, you are using it at the wrong time.


Humor me and try one complete run from start to finish without any brake cleaner within two miles of your setup.

Sorry to hear of your woes Zamble.

What kind of park solution is this your using? Most homebrews in my experience don't work right or don't last if they do work at first.

Very common. As it's been mentioned in this thread, many different factors determine the final color.

All of the original AK parts appeared to turn out black. I have everything soaking in oil right now. Been in oil for hour and a half now.

All the original AK parts are a different grade of steel then the new production receiver.

Leave it in oil for at least a day, less if it is warmer, oil will fill poars making it darker and rust resistant. Some people leave it in oil for weeks.

I just went out to check on the parts. While some things look ok, the majority look like crap. While I apparently had none of my previous issues, the finished pieces look bad. I used soft plastic tongs, and some parts have like fine scratchs scratches. Other parts have spots on them where the park is a lot lighter then the rest of the part. The receiver is barely grey.

None of these parts would I or anyone else be proud of the have on an assembled rifle.

I will let them soak for a day or two, like it will matter. And then I will post some pics of the crap.

If anyone has a park setup nearish to Stockton, let me know. I will pay a reasonable fee to have you park my stuff. I have the AK, 3 Ak mags, and 2 USGI .45 mags.

Hope everything comes out of the oil well, I'm rooting for you! You have definitely paid your dues to the parking gods. Post some pics when you get them wiped down.

Man I don't know what you're doing wrong.
The two build parties I've been to. We had so many yahoo's dunking stuff in the park tank and you'd be surprised how well these rifle came out.

Some had minor issues but most were spot on perfect.

Why don't you just box your stuff up and send it to Scott at Hot Flash, up in Redding area. Pay his minimum and be done with it.
