    AK pistol legality conversion question

I am looking at getting my first AK pistol, and had a idea I wanted to ask about.
    Looking at a AMD-65 7.62x39 AK47.
The rifle has a 12.5" barrel with a muzzle brake attached permenently, making it 16", The total length without the stock is 24".
So what I would like to know is if I could legally make this a pistol.
    & if that works.
Could I have some kind of quick connect piece on the back of the reciever that would attach and make it a rifle. Non folding stock. It's to short (24" ) to be a rifle without the stock, but if I have a warsaw stock that could quickly attach this would meet rifle requirements, being over 30" & 16" barrel.

The only question would be how would I regester it, because you can make a pistol into a rifle, but not vice versa.
Just food for thought before I buy it. I would keep a bullet button on it the whole time and would like to do a quad rail with a horizontal forward grip, not a forward pistol grip.

You can not make a pistol from a rifle, without an SBR tax stamp. The way you're phrasing it, it sounds like you want to start with an AMD 65 rifle. Just het a parts kit and build it as a pistol from the start.

Great idea, thanks. so that isn't considered a pistol unless you register it that way when built.

You are building a pistol. No requirement to register it.

No requirement to register a pistol when you build it?

Wonder if anyone sells them as a pistol.

You don't have to reg. it ONLY if you build it from a parts kit. AKBuilder sells a pistol parts kit.

I've built about a dozen of them, they were all DROS as single shot pistols.

                      As it's been stated:
You cannot build a pistol from a rifle.

                      I'll add:
If it starts as a pistol, and you convert it to a rifle, it's now (forever) a rifle. If it is a rifle, and you remove the stock, and the OAL falls to 24"(as you stated), you are now in possession of an SBR & AW, in violation of
Federal(26" min OAL), as well as State law(30" min OAL) respectively.

You can build it on a virgin receiver, just like a pistol, as a title 1 gun, but it must be 26" OAL. If you add a stock, it is now and forever a rifle (see above).
