    Saiga Barrel work needs refinishing?

I recently got a quote from a shop to do some barrel work for me. I wanted to have the gas block replaced on my saiga with an integrated fsb block, and then have the barrel cut down and the ak74 brake permanently attached for a 16" barrel.

The quote came back in line with what I was expecting it to be, .. but they mentioned that the rifle would have exposed metal from the barrel work and need to be refinished? They insisted it would need to be parkerized and have a moly resin finish applied. This service will more than double the price!

I guess I am confused. I f the brake is being permanently attached I don't see where the exposed metal will be? Are they referring to the new threads that the brake will go on? Can't those just be quickly blued, and then throw on a little moly grease before adding the brake?

Exposed metal would be from where they pinned and welded it.
You can blue it but the correct way is to parkerize it.
If you don't want to spend the money for parkerizing and moly resin you can always just used Rustoleum Textured Black spray paint. It very closely matches the original Saiga finish.

If your welding a brake to the muzzle your gonna need something that treats the metal. A coating won't work , it'll just burn off and the moly grease will contaminate and possibly catch on fire.
My question is how much are you planning to chop because the 74 brake is only 3-4" long and there's more then that in front of the gas block.
The Gas block sight base is threaded generally, there should be no need to thread the barrel at all. What shop did you contact?

My mistake was I did not realize the brake would be welded, I thought it was done with a set pin or something.

I was going to have rifle dynamics put a bolton gas block on (which is not threaded), and just cut the barrel as much as they could to the point that by attaching my 4 1/4" brake the total barrel length ends up 16". The original barrel is 16.3", so I am hoping that after cutting the brake would be pretty flush with the gas block at 16" total.

Yeah it sounds like they are trying to charge you more then they should. The brake will need to be pinned and the pin will need to be welded to the brake. If not, they, and you could end up in the pokey. I see no need to park and moly the threads unless they were trying to sell you a full refinish. They will have to remove the barrel to perform that job, or they would be guilty of manufacturing an AW, if that shop is in CA.
