    Custom Extended AK-74 Muzzle Device

Big thanks to nicoroshi for creating this for me. I am building an AK-74M clone with a bulgarian kit and russian folding stock, and decided that I wanted to keep the stock folding. Since the OAL with the stock folded would only be 27 3/8", I had the idea of cutting a cheap half-moon brake up and having a pipe welded in the middle to create an OAL of a little bit over 30".
I went to nicoroshi to have this done for me, and it came out looking awesome. With a mock up of the kit, it comes out to just about 30.5" with the stock folded. The project was definitely a learning experience, and i look forward to doing some more cool projects with nicoroshi in the future. Thanks again Nico!

Learning experience for both of us.

since the pipe provided for the project was the correct interior dimension but larger on the exterior than the original brake I needed to come up with a way to turn down the exterior of the welded brake to a consistent diameter.

      Enter thinking outside the box

Without a lathe in my shop I looked to the only thing I could think of that would spin the brake at a constant rate so I could work the side.....My drill press.
      Hmmmm, no centers........what to do?
Turned down a wooden dowel to fit the interior of the end of the brake, and used a skateboard wheel bearing on a schedule 5 bolt in my drill press vice for a live tailstock center.

      Looked like this:

Tried sandpaper, and emery cloth......too slow but smooth.
Tried a file.....a little quicker but rough, and tough to keep consistent.
Awww forget it give me that 4 1/2" grinder with a 80 grit flapper wheel on it!

Now we're cookin' with rocket fuel!

Finished brake (after a few attempts at getting it centered with the bore) before paint:

Thanks for the fun project 7,62x39.

That is how I just made a barrel for my AK pistol. I used an aluminum tube instead of a dowel though. And I used an air die grinder with a Roloc disk.

Will do...I couldn't resist buying a russian FS/GB combo today for a 105 build, so it might be a bit until i can make my ak-builder order....the addiction is too strong, i just couldn't resist it

Heck I went out into the garage just to see if I could do the same thing with a drill press and a grinder on something/anything...that is a groovy trick.
