I don't have any "proper" 1911 tools but have a machine shop, in Orange. Most of the tools needed I made myself. Luckily the frame I got had a few of the holes finished already.

I needed to counterbore the mag release, mill the slide rails, barrel bed, disconnecter hole and backbore (biggest Pits of the project), mainspring housing slot and ways, sear spring alot, top of frame as it was way oversize, open up the trigger area and sear area for slight clearance, cut the dust cover to length, tap the grip screw bushing holes (only tool I purchased for the project), drill the ejector holes, drill the plunger tube holes, blend everything and fit.

    I still need sights.

Did you remember what was missing from the CAD files Couch?

Anybody have complete plans on how to build one?

I ask because it seems to me they could be done with a regular endmill by clamping the frame to a setup plate. It could also be done fairly easily by clamping the frame to a right angle plate and using a t slot cutter.

      Edit:

      Here's what I mean:
Put this plate in your vice and drill and press two pins into the plate for aligning the frame parallel to the x axis. Drill and tap a couple of holes for toe clamps, and then mill the slot.

Or you can use a 1 /16 keyway cutter and make 2 cuts or a.120 keyway cutter to cut the rails on the frame and make 'em .050 deep.Easy to do Mate.
If you need the specs and setup info let me know.

It would be awesome if you could give the specs. I'm trying to figure out how to get some people together to build some 1911's. Any available specs would be greatly appreciated.

I am willing to bring any specialty cutters that are needed for a build party. I most likely have any slit-saw, t-slot cutter, long reaching mills, or whatever we might need in my shop. If I don't have a given tool, I can make custom tools too, to contribute to a group build.

This thread is definitely relevant to my interests. Who is making 60% frames these days anyway? Couch, I'm definitely sending you a PM to be in touch about your fully machined frames.

I have three 1911 frame castings and a mill. I’ll be getting into building 1911’s at some point; I just don’t have the time to figure it all out for a while.
If someone in true northern CA (Redding area) wanted to do some of the leg work we could use my shop.

Man glad I happened across this page. I hardly ever browse the handgun forum as its been years since I owned a handgun. Sold them off to fund the AR craze a few years back. I built all my first ARs from the receiver up and have since owned over a dozen since then.

Now comming across this thread makes me want to start all over with the 1911!

I would like to get any info on building up a 1911 as I want to build a 6 inch barreled model with a compensator on the end.

I will tag and follow for later.

I've met Jardine once. Last I heard, getting anything done by Jardine would take quite a few years.

i've often thought of purchasing on of the fusion firearm kits...not sure if they're CA approved but they sure seem like a great way to start.

Everything less the frame you can get.

But recently we have FFLs that are doing single shot conversions so it would be possible to get a fusion 1911

I would be very interested in attending one of these party's if or when one should come about. I would be willing to chip in on any additional supplies/materials need for this event.

                            OK...
                            Tram your mill.
The first thing is to set the frame in the mill perfect and I mean dead straight and solidly clamped and dialed in straight up.
Once its perfectly setup check it again to make sure.

Now the cuts you have to make.I use a 1/16 keyway cutter ( Make 2 cuts )and cut exactly .105 below the top edge ( .105 will give you National Match Specs and .108 is maximum ) and then open it up to .119 and go .050 deep.( Do this to both sides of the frame exactly )Do not remove the frame after doing one side,Just move the cutter to the other side..Your slide might not go on as you will have a tight fit and will need to be lapped which will make it a perfect fit.You also want to round the fronts of the rail gently and debur it so the slide can go on for an inch or so with a rubber mallet. Then use the rubber mallet to get the slide off and start lapping. Then you can polish the frame,Fit an ejector,Checker it if you want ect..ect.

Also after you have done the above you may want to fit a ramped barrel.I have measurements for those cuts too ( Clark or Nowlin ).Just ask and I will try to help you along.
